Black screen, unless Windowed
Unlike a lot of people with the black screen problem, mine runs fine in Windowed mode. However, whenever I choose any kind of Fullscreen, or Zoom, I get a black screen. You can see the border art on the sides, but the screen is black. You can also hear sound, and move the icon around. Ideas?

Have you tried updating your graphics card drivers?

Also, can you install the DirectX 9.0c runtimes:

I have updated them recently. The GeForce thing tends to keep things up to date. I have messed around with the Direct X stuff, to fix one other game of mine...but my computer just says it has a more recent version, and won't update. I will see if this works at all. I just can't understand why the game runs fine, but won't if launched from Steam. That's really odd.

Installed Runtime. Didn't help.

Hey, it seems like this problem is being caused by Nvidia cards and their compatibility with Gunhound.
Could you try going into your Steam Settings and turning your Broadcasting settings to disabled?

Didn't work.

Could you post your PC Specs and, if you get one, a crash report please.

I'll look into that crash thing, but it doesn't crash. It just has a black screen. You can still see the wallpapers, oddly enough.

The game has only one internal resolution and handles scaling poorly. It does not use true fullscreen rendering either. Make sure you have tried the usual "disable steam overlay/afterburner overlay" steps as well.

What is your desktop resolution? Set your desktop resolution to something common/safe like 1280x720 or 1024x768 and see if the game can scale to that in "fullscreen".

Usually, when you see blackscreen, the game is still rendered to an unscaled window you can alt-tab to (or you can see in windows preview freature if you hover over taskbar without switching windows).

I just reinstalled in this game for the first time in years and I'm seeing this problem with fullscreen mode, too, even without Steam overlay enabled. This is a serious problem and I'm surprised the developer never bothered to update or fix this problem among other issues I mentioned here before.

EDIT: The other major problems I've mentioned and gone unadressed for years.

I have a desktop with only one Nvidia video card and no integrated graphics card, and my Steam broadcasting settings were already disabled prior to launching the game on Steam and the same problem happens when playing the DRM-free version from Playism, none of these solutions help.

Can you then confirm that:

I already had DirectX 9.0c runtimes installed and recently re-installed the Visual C++ redistributables a few weeks ago and I still get this problem with fullscreen.

Then I'm afraid it really is a Nvidia incompatibility issue. And there isn't much I can personally do about it sadly...
