How Metroidvania/Linear is this game?
Hello!

I wasn't going to post this for this game but after reading some of the reviews I see some people complaining that the game is too simple with barely any secrets (or too easy to find) and that it's too straight-forward.. ..which for me means best game ever :yella_laughing:

I have a pretty short fuse when it comes to games that require you to backtrack and use newly acquired items/powers to enter an area that was previously not accessible.

This concept is what the tag Metroidvania describes; unfortunately nowadays people tend to put that tag on games that are extremely linear and literally doesn't offer any freedom when it comes to "exploration".
- A few examples would be :
Have a Nice Death; Shovel Knight; Metal Unit.

I enjoyed those games very much and clearly I don't think they should be standing as Metroidvanias next to games like :
Hollow Knight; Salt and Sanctuary, Worldless, VVVVVV.

So that being said; how would you say ENDER MAGNOLIA compares to those games?

Do you have to look for directions often? Do you have to remember stuff from previous areas and go back there to progress sometimes? Do you just need to enter the room, kill everything, and pick Door A or Door B to get to the next room?

It's really difficult to know without doing some research or looking at some extended gameplay; and I love going into a game fully blind and clueless which is why I'm asking here on the forums :ExcitedMiria:

There’s not much backtracking and with a map that has blocked exits labeled and rooms color-coded for being complete/incomplete, you won’t have any difficulty figuring out where to go or where the secrets are. It is a metroidvania but it’s an awesome game whether you want to call it that or not.

Also, if you’re unfamiliar with the series, this is the second game. The first game is Ender Lilies and while it’s not really important to play that game first, both are awesome so there’s not much reason to skip it.

Definitely a metroidvania with some classic backtracking, but it is pretty easy to figure out where to go and you won't get lost often with the fantastic map (Unlike the first game)

Mostly you are exploring and progressing to the next new area, though there are plenty of times when you get a new powerup and can go back to old areas to reach items you couldn't get before.

Yeah i would say play the first one beforehand. i have just played both of these games and did them one after the other. I have 100% both which isn't overly difficult to do if you enjoy the games.

While technically you don't need to of played the first game, you are going to miss out on a lot of references and the background theme of how the blight etc works.

These are both non-linear action adventure games (Metroidvanias if you want to call them that), that have very good world building and passable combat / skills that do improve significantly as you progress the game.

With how you described your requirements, yes this game (and its sequel) would fit your criteria to not give you a hard time with backtracking etc.
