It was also suggested that Afterburner and RivaTuner (as well as any kind of monitoring software) was the issue .... Stutters occur with it on or off
I'm always lurking in the background on this and the SCS forum reading threads on the stutter and FPS drops ..... And I always try the suggestions posted but have never had complete success
I'm very curious as to what's going on every 5 minutes to cause my issue .... Quite a noodle scratcher
Does it actually stop when you disable them? Because every five mins could actually be the game autosaving.
Try looking at Windows Task Manager, a program running in the background and using CPU cycles at regular intervals could be the problem, or if you have a slow HDD, or use Microsoft OneDrive as the "home" directory, then the regular auto-saves could be causing it.
It is best to not have any programs running as well as ATS, no browsers, Internet chat, Discord servers, nothing at all if possible.
I have a long list of possible fixes, compiled from all the suggestions that players have posted to fix stuttering and lagging. If you would be interested I could post it here.
P.S. After seeing #Nimir-Raj post, I should add that I run RivaTuner Statistics Server and MSI Afterburner in every game I play and have never had any stuttering or lagging at all. They are very useful tools for trouble-shooting and do not usually interfere with games running, that would defeat the whole object of them.
I don't use OneDrive and use a nearly empty SSD (the kind that looks like a stick)
I have seen many of your posts regarding suggestions and have tried most, if not all of them..... But if it's an easy copy/paste I think it would be helpful for you to post it again.... If not for me at the very least it might help someone else out
AfterBurner is an ancient tool and a waste of time to deal with in my pov, even if it "works" for some of you guys.
Not a problem:
Some helpful hints from players in this forum to note for better performance:
If you've previously used the TAA graphics mod, delete all files from it. (Snowymoon mod)
Make sure the game and Steam are not running in compatibility mode.
If running windows 7, use OpenGL mode as DX no longer works. Windows 7 is no longer supported by Steam or Microsoft, you need to upgrade to Win 10 or 11.
*Make sure your Windows swap file is set to 'system managed'IMPORTANT*
Disable the NVIDIA overlay
Disable the Discord overlay
Disable the Steam overlay.
Do not have any programs running in the background, especially Discord, browsers, Internet chat or messaging.
Reduce any scaling back to 100%
Don't overclock your GPU, even if it is factory overclocked.
You may need more than 20GB free on the system drive for swap files
If you are on NVIDIA and have previously used the Profile Inspector for better anti-aliasing, all SCS profiles MUST be restored to driver default, for game version 1.50.
If you use DSR, deactivate it.
Turn off or reduce SSAO
Clean all system fans, make sure all grilles are free from dust and the cooling works properly for the system, the PSU, the GPU and CPU.
Some anti-virus programs can cause a crash on start. You only need to use Windows Defender, that is the most reliable anti-virus and firewall program for Windows. Third-party paid for software is not needed.
Always make sure your graphics drivers and Windows are both fully up to date.
Thanks to all
There is not. The only related setting is to turn off the icon popping up when it happens.
Will need to do more testing in other areas specially the intersections where the GPU spikes and frame drops happen quite often.
And oh, I do run Cipus' Real Traffic Density mod which adds like a hundred cars all over the place and at busy intersections which obviously causes resource drains and spikes, specially the GPU (not the CPU).
I never would have guessed this is the cause
I'm using a 1TB NVMe SSD that has 2/3 free space
I guess I'll have to look into the health of the drive and perhaps uninstalling the rest of my old drives. I've been too lazy to transfer files over the years and just keep all my old drives so maybe that's an issue????
