American Truck Simulator
Fail to yeild.
Car or truck comes down the on-ramp to the freeway, I cant move over due to traffic, slams into my trailer and I get charged with causing an accident. This happen to others or is my game a bit buggy?

Slow down.

Just like in real life you have to anticipate to the traffic and predict their actual behavior to avoid accidents. Unlike real life the NPC traffic in the game is very predictable.

fines don't care who was at fault in game
yes, ai pay attention to vehicles merging into them, but pay no attention to what they merge into in all circumstances.
Intended as the AI is using the zipper merge which speeds up traffic flow. Only expense is that you now have to pay a bit more attention. But that should be no issue as you have mirrors and a brake.
and are the only entity in the game capable of anticipation

You sure? From what I see here I would actually disagree.

Wait! You call this zipper merge? If so, then please, if you have driving license IRL, for the sake of other drivers, return your driving license and let yourself tested again. Because what I see the AI drivers do in the game is exactly what I was taught NOT to do in zipper merge.

Unfortunately. SCS needs to address this and soon. But we had this debate many times in past and nothing changed. And probably never will, as this is not a priority for SCS :-(

If you fail to let the AI in then this is your fault. You hopefully also got taught to not be a douche on the road and look out for others. That is what you seem to fail at here.

You now know exactly what the NPC (AI) traffic will do, and you can also see they follow a set behaviour for all driving, so it is now up to you to drive accordingly, not expect them to accommodate you. If they are driving down an on-ramp in front of you, slow down, or move over, it's that simple.
SCS can only do so much tweaking with the NPC traffic, they have made many changes, mostly at the request of players, bu there is a limit to what they can program. NPC's can't see you, can't hear you and can't predict what you will do, they just follow a script and algorithm that keeps traffic moving and not constantly hitting you or each other. For the most part they do a pretty good job.
The biggest problem is some players cannot drive to suit the game, they drive to suit themselves and come off worst. The vast majority can drive for thousands of miles and never hit anything, they don't need to come on here and tell everyone. There is never much sympathy for these posts on here, it is, regretfully, entirely in your hands to fix it, not SCS.
It's always a fun time driving when everyone is the main character.
lol SCS simps are in full force. It is a known fact that ATS traffic implementation sucks because of dev lazines and\or incompetence.

Ah, yes. Me with massive ADHD who has no issue with paying attention to traffic and being able to use the minimal required attention to look into my mirror and can thus drive thousands of miles without any issues even without any medication, am a simp. Makes sense. NOT.

Just say that you suck at driving. Makes you come across way less unlikable.

But since you are way more competent (or how else should someone interpret your comment) please go ahead and make a mod that fixes traffic or make a game with perfect traffic.

And if you need help, type this into the console:
g_traffic 0
No pesky traffic that is too difficult for you to handle.

Happened to me on a run last night. I chalk it up to realism—it's far from implausible that some nitwit sending a text message slams into a truck because they weren't looking where they were going _on the freaking freeway._ If the traffic copter on the radio's anything to go by, it's practically a daily occurrence in Seattle...
traffic does behave weird.
With ramps, traffic will never stop. They will merge onto. So unless you can make space, you kind of have to live with that.

Has nothing to do with real life and traffic ingame doesn't ever behave realistic as there are quite a few cases where they just do silly stuff or use the approach of 'right of way does not exist for me'

The longer you deal with that ai, the more predictable this all becomes.
It is a bit frustrating .. but in the grand scheme of things, its also 100% of a minor to non issue.
The traffic generally seems to ignore us to a larger extent. This is most likely due to how the behaviors coding into the vehicles is being done, or is lacking. It could be a limitation with the engine - such that, the code would check within a frequency or X seconds of what is around that vehicle. That could pose significant problems with persons that have configured their traffic to be more realistic as the calculations would be performed much more frequently.

It would be nice to see this area improved as the OP is completely spot on. This isn't a matter of just watching out for other traffic and being accountable for coding behaviors that do not exist or the timer to recheck around them is set far too long.
