I was wondering the same... does look like it .. or maybe more an evolution of CF?

It's kinda like that but with also traces of Battlefield, and planetside mixed in. Battlefield as in: You capture places, and Planetside because there can be long battles that take more than 30 minutes to complete. If you enjoy any of these games, RwR is a good and cheap game to play.

not a clone, lets just say rwr is combination of cannon fodder, arma and battlefield.

Any mature (cough!) gamers willing to admit their age and agree that this looks a lot like the classic Cannon Fodder for the Amiga?

And if so is RWR anything like it?

Forget about the graphics. They are servicable and do an adequate job or portraying what is going on. Instead concentrate on the gameplay, which is glorious. I guess part of it is remembering how much fun those old games on the Amiga, like Cannon Fodder! This game really reminds me of this.

The graphics are great in my opinion. The developers made an excellent choice going with this graphical and artistic style. It works really well with the tone and feel of the game.

The gameplay is king though, as you said. Indie developers really should have a better reputation than they do with some people. My favorite games of the last two years have been Indie games, including this one. Have spent 14 hours in RWR, in 2 days. Can't take my hands off it.

Yeah, I'm about to have another go myself. On my first campaign , doing a circle round the outside then move in on the centre. Great stuff!

I don't get where all the amazing reviews are going with this. How does this game have an "Overwhelmingly Positive" review score?

Yeah, yeah, here come the "you must be stupid, go back to Farmville" comments. Go ahead and get that out of your system is you want, but I'd rather someone just explain to me how this game is so appealing.

I loved Cannon Fodder back in the day, I'm a fan of action games and top-down shooters, but this just feels like a free flash game ported over to Steam. So shallow and grindy. Or is there a whole strategic layer that I'm somehow missing?

Grindy? what are you grinding exactly?
If you would say what mode you played, then people would tell you what you missed.
Play a 32vs32 domination mode PvP, Get ranks and controll your own 4 men bot squad.
Order artillery barrages\tanks\rubber boats etc, to flank and advance through enemy lines.
Take weapons from the armory - sniper\assaults rifles or mortar\minigun setup and put it in a trench and prevent the enemy forces from capturing the zones.

If that is shallow, then i don't know what i can say about Cannon Fodder.
