oh, i never reviewed, BL:tps...

ok, its older now. Many people hate on TPS, but there's a lot of good here.

Ok, the story, is somewhat contrived, cause they have to fit into the existing plot from BL2. BL really never had a "great" story. Great villian, maybe. But story was always mostly there for show.

In BL:TPS, you have good gunplay, and very good mobility with the new hover-slam move. Ya, some people complain that in low gravity, jumping feels slow and floaty -- but if you dont like it, just hover-slam. problem solved.

While some of the character's may be forgettable -- I mean nisha is something of a minor character in BL2 -- the actual skill trees for the characters in TPS are pretty good.

Nisha is a "glass cannon", they say. and she CAN do lots of burst damage, but with the right skill loadout, she can heal a heck of a lot of damage, while still melting baddies.

Athena is a "tank", they say. Yeah, shes got decent defense with the shield. But with builds you can do massive elemental stacking, and rock the world. More fun than you'd expect a Captain America clone to be.

Cl4p-Trp is a "mistake", a "joke". yes. But, damn, some of his skills can be strong. You can build to buff others in coop, and/or build for massive explosive damage, both are strong. His "special cooldown" power is random -- sorta. Cause it only selects from a few default effects, and the ones you've unlocked. So if you pay attention to which skills you unlock, you've got about a 50% chance of having one of the effects you actually WANT to happen.

The DLC characters, Jack, and the Ice Countess -- are so strong. And so fun.


Seriously -- if you just listen to the memes, and assume this game is total crap, you're missing out. It's not better than Borderlands 2 -- ok, i admit that. but heck, what IS better? BL2 was *amazing*. BL:tps is still pretty durn fun!!

This is an odd duck. The opening, closing, and all narration is set between the end of BL2 and the start of the Commander Lilith DLC, but the STORY and gameplay is set maybe a few months after the events in BL1. This gives a bit of back story before the Hyperion take over of Pandora and adds some depth to the overall franchise story.
Most of the playable characters are either NPCs from BL2, or NPCs from the later BL3. The base quartet is Athena, a gladiator who is the focus of the opening, ending and narrations; Wihelm, an enforcer (BL2 mini boss), Nisha, a "lawbringer" (and the Sheriff of Lynchwood in BL2), and Fragtrap, the bumbling Claptrap we've all come to hate given software that makes him a combat robot. There are two unlockable characters: Timothy, a Handsome Jack body double (NPC in a BL3 DLC), and Aurelia Hammerlock, a rich person (a mid-boss in BL3, and Sir Hammerlock's sister).
This game adds a new weapon type: Lasers. They come in four subtypes: Blaster, Beam, Splitter (think laser shotgun) and Railgun.
The story is not as long as BL2, but isn't bad. It's set in two principal areas: Helios, a Hyperion space station, still under construction, and Elpis, Pandora's Moon.
Now, I must point out that the presence of Cryo element weapons creates an anachronism, since BL2 had none, and the Lasers, because neither BL2, nor BL3 have any, though a few Maliwan guns in BL3 have similar properties. The other issue is the moon itself. It has no atmosphere, but you can walk around nearly naked and not freeze to death, which makes zero sense, nor does the lava/magma. Yes, there are vehicles. The first is a moon buggy, based on the Lunar Rovers sent to the Moon on the Apollo, and a Stingray, which like a hoverbike that you unlock later.
The story gives us a glimpse in what Jack was like before BL2 and what made into the monster he became. The Claptrap DLC explains how Claptrap ended up where he was at the beginning of BL2.
If you want to get super meta, play the Claptrap DLC as Claptrap....

Pros:
While it isn't made by the same dev team as the first two games, it is still largely the same arcadey action adventure you can expect from those so it has the same look and feel.
I found the story interesting from what I saw of it. It is a nice touch, being able to see what the villains were up to.

Cons:
The game is spent entirely on a planetary moon so you have to constantly deal with your oxygen levels (not a huge deal since they make that easy to replenish) and low gravity. The low grav part is extremely frustrating. Enemies will move about side to side and jump all the sudden so they go flying into the air super fast and are coming at you from above at all angles. This would normally be a good thing that enemies are hard to hit but in this game it is often you against 50 and all of them bum rush you at once.
The Borderlands games don't have a difficulty selector. The first 2 games could be played solo and the difficulty would presumably scale up as other players join you. I don't like to play games with others so I prefer solo. This game seems like it was designed specifically to be played with a group as you will CONSTANTLY get swarmed with massive numbers of enemies that are all hard to hit and each one is a bullet sponge. The first boss will take down even your best shield in seconds and then you just get gang banged until you die repeatedly. When you add low gravity into it, it just makes it that much harder.

DO NOT BUY THE CLAPTRAP DLC!!!!!!!!!!!!! This DLC is hands down the worst DLC i have ever purchased they make you fight the boos 4 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time

I liked it! at the time this came out everyone hated on it, but I can firmly say: its more borderlands.

Get ready to loot, to shoot, and have a hoot while doing so. Four very different, very unique classes. Good amount of builds, and if playing on base difficulty its a lot of fun times. Decent length too, maybe even too long. Didnt try to play on harder difficulties, and the loot was fine (now) though apparently that wasnt always so. Decent music, lots of colors and fun places to see, and if you at all care about BL's story then this game has you covered, somehow.

Shooting isnt the best, and the laser weapons and rockets are a bit overtuned, but hey its a blast. Its also frickin easy. Get it on sale, or if the Handsome collection still exists get it via that. Have fun!

This game easily stands right next to BL2 in terms of the writing quality and overall enjoyment. It's truly a shame that the Gearbox AUS shut down because this game is a banger and deserved so much more love.
