Growing fiefs takes a long time.
cheatengine.
for newbs : kill enemies - sell loot.
(forest bandits are cheap upkeep for the power they bring..)
+ you can do some trade.. use a guide to find optimal buy & sell cities and prices
but my main unlimited moneyprinter is the breeder perk..
Once your clan level up a bit get 5 more companions/family members for a total of 9 with over 100 in melee skills. Then you can get the highest tier rewards from tournaments, with helmets that sell for up to 60k each. You basically don't have to worry about money at that point.
This shouldn't be hard; your brother is already over 100 in most combat skills. Once you get about 100k from selling tournament rewards, buy yourself and your brother spouses with good combat skills from other clans. This alone will get you three fighters without costing you any companion spots. Unfortunately the player for some reason never counts as a champion, so only companions/family members will work.
There's also A LOT of tournaments around. Ask the tournament master at any arena if you're having trouble finding one.
Also buy trade goods and sell them as you go from city to city. Depending on your route, you should buy what the next town you're going to DOESN'T have (just check the produces of it's trade bound villages), and that almost always will net you a profit, even if they're extremely close to each other. This will level up your trade skill which allows you to sell stuff for more.
Also bet on all of your tournaments. You will be top of the arena leaderboard pretty quickly if you go with this strategy, but it'll still get you plenty of extra money early on.
I'm going to assume your issue is that you fully upgrade every soldier and over do things with garrisons as that's the norm for people that complain about this? I'm a huge fan of not over upgrading troops, or over recruiting depending on what you are doing. To me the game is also far more fun when you have real fair battles rather than running around with a massive maxed out army while you abuse the AI.
If you are still in the early game hunting bandits keep your troop count low and only upgrade troops enough so losses are not problematic. Personally I go with around 20 men at T2-T3, they are cheap, easy to replace, and plenty for taking out bandits.
Once I become a mercenary I get more troops (around 30-40) but I still keep them around T3 with my focus being on hunting bandits and joining battles between lords. The mercenary contract alone pays for your army + recruits with plenty left over and battle loot should quickly make you plenty of coin at this point.
As I become a newbie Lord I will have around 60 men in my army and keep most at T3 with a portion being at T4 and maybe a few at T5. At this point I'm part of a faction and will build workshops that profit me more than the cost of my army as it's not fully upgraded. Soon as I get settlements I fill them with t3 troops and make a profit on all of them. Battle loot gets better and as my clan level grows along with my skills I expand my army. It's really only when I'm a king and moving into the endgame when I use a larger number of fully upgraded troops. I try to keep my army comparable to other lords around my level so things make sense.
At no point past the early game do I lose money with my armies compared to what I passively earn so I have plenty of gold.
With the Roguery skill you get more battle loot and with trade you can sell the loot you get for more coin. While I'm no fan of Tournament spam they are a good source of income with no risk. Trade is also not bad if you know what you are doing, If I know I can pick up cheap goods that sell for a profit while I'm traveling I will make sure to look out for good deals.
Lords have some easy missions that pay very well, for example I always keep some of the horses the lords of my nation ask for as it's a quick and massive profit.
Just take your time, don't over upgrade, over recruit, or worry about buying the best equipment right away and gold will never be an issue.
Here's some things yo
Do you have the trade perks/level? That helps a lot.
Are you trading the right stuff for each city (each city has specialized productions)
Are you checking what workshops are located in the city? That matters.
Do you check the prices comparing to prices in the other cities?
merc is the only way to play bannerlord till max clan tier 6.
fiefs are a joke for income, its nothing
a merc get 5-10k daily income and can sell billion loot and prisoners.
you jump from one battle to the next every second (you can always leave a kingdom).
if you have woundet troops, free some prisoners of a enemy party or fief...
you never have a downtime like when you play vassal.
BUT.... but you're 100% right, smithing is a money maker.
Almost, but not quite, as OP as battle loot. And if you are a mercenary, you get paid twice -- once when you collect your merc earnings, and once when you sell your loot.
Nothing beats f1 > f3 > go pee > collect loot.
breeder perk is better.
1 win a few wotans from tournaments
2 pick breeder perk
3 full inventory with 100000 horses (ignore herding speed penalty)
sell all horses you get but keep wotans until you have a few hundred wotans..
than sell all horses but wotans.
every 100 wotans in inventory now = 20k/day
(i currently have a little over 500 wotans and 100 million after 4 years.. and i not earned a dime smithing (in fact I sunk nearly 40 mil now in buying stuff to melt down)
thus you never take nor become a vassal. independent rule ftw.
1 lord to rule them all.
as for troop upkeep : bandits. especially forest bandits.
powerful as tier 4 fians.
but cost 8 gold not 12.
