Desperadoes Wanted Dead or Alive all of a sudden not working
Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive will not run on GOG or Steam all of a sudden. Trying to run the executable and I get this error "The application was unable to start correctly 0xc000007b" Anyone run into this and how to solve? I've uninstalled and reinstalled. Ran as Admin. No luck. I am running Win 11 64 bit

I had the same issue on my AMD PC. I managed to fix it by uninstalling all the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable programs. Then I re-downloaded both the 32 and 64 bit ones from the official Microsoft site - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170 - I installed the 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015-2022 bundles.

If you have manually added some msvcpXYZ.dll and/or msvcrXYZ.dll DLLs in the past you may need to delete them first from C:\Windows\System32.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Have you attempted to verify game files? (right click game in Steam library > Properties > Local files > verify integrity of game files)

Thanks. Yes. I attempted all the usual fixes like verify files, uninstall, reinstall, changing the name. Just weird that both the GOG and STEAM version no long work for me.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

YRC, I appreciate your response as this is still not fixed. I will try your suggestion sometime this weekend and report back if it works. (Love your handle, BTW!)

YRC, tried your solution and it did not work. Still receiving the same error.

Another thing I did was remove 2 registry entries:
  • Under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]:
    "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\GOG Galaxy\\Games\\Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive\\desperados.exe"
  • And under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]:
    "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\GOG Galaxy\\Games\\Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive\\desperados.exe"
as noted here - https://www.gog.com/forum/desperados_series/desperado_wanted_dead_or_alive_not_launching

Maybe reboot Windows after that.

FYI I'm using Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive Re-modernized on Windows 10.

I did this a few weeks ago and it did not solve the problem. But I did not reboot. I just tried the game again and both my Steam and GOG versions worked perfectly. Thanks!

I fix the issue this way, finally. Thank you so much. I would suggest if anyone has the 2008 version of Visual C++ this could be the glitch. However, just uninstall all versions you have installed, download and install the 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015-2022 bundles, only. The reboot windows and you can play.
