I just finished Avernum. It was very fun. The only thing hard about it was that it was easy to go in to dungeons that are to hard for your character. The turn based combat is a little crunchy but once you get used to it very rewarding. I just installed eschallon and it looks a little more 8-bit RPG style

call me wierd, but I like when I put armor on my characters, to be able to see the armor on he character, not whatever premade is there. Eshcalon allows a change on the avatar, be is basic, Avernum doesn't. But you can't beat either for the price

Avernum and all the sequels all the way

Avernum has always been my favorite series in this genre. I've bought it direct, then from GOG, and again for Steam... for various reasons... The feel of Eschalon is better, more engrossing. But, Avernum runs a bit faster, it's more familiar, and you don't always need to use the mouse...

+1 Avernum also..

This is free and a good game. But all Spiderweb Software games are amazing - the Avernums, Geneforges, Avadons, Nethergate, and Queen's Wish.

Just beware that after you've played your third or fourth Spiderweb game they will all start to seem the same and you will get sick of them like I have.

The graphics are much better in this game, and it's a very short experience (about 15 hours). I think Avernum is better, though.

Avernum works on M1 Macs but Eschalon doesn't unfortunately

I enjoyed some Avernum but decided to wait until I could get Geneforge instead. It looks superb and I don't want familiar mechanics like Mikali said..

Eschalon is alot better than avernum, i think avernum is ass.

Let me put it this way: I have played several of the Avernum games and never finished one. They are all pretty much the same and I have not ever felt like playing any of them again. The Eschalon games I have played many times with different classes and finished every one. Yes, I would recommend the Eschalon games over any Spiderweb game. I am not saying that Spiderweb games are bad but for me they get boring quickly. But try them all. They are cheap enough!
