CS works fine in Linux.

What is the hardware specs of your device?

Native version never worked or worked like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Op, switch to the proton version for vastly more stable experience.

I haven't used it in a while but, in my experience, the Linux version worked best for me with an all AMD system. Mixing Intel or Nvidia in the mix was a hit or miss ordeal.

Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS
Intel I5-3570
RadeonR7 250 GDDR5 1Gb
6Gb system memory

I tired the Proton version, which still crashes.

You don’t have enough memory. Unfortunately the game simply crashes when it runs out of memory instead of telling you what went wrong and then exiting gracefully.

6GB is the bare minimum requirement for the base game with no DLC. Every DLC, mod, and workshop asset that you add will increase the memory requirement. I would start by unsubscribing from every single DLC, mod, and workshop asset, then making sure that absolutely every other program is closed before running the game. Close your web browser. Close your bittorrent client. Run the game directly instead of running it through Steam if you have to.

Or just upgrade your memory. Your i5–3570 needs DDR3 1600, which is super cheap compared to the newer DDR5. I use newegg.com for searching, since it has the best parameterized search of anyone. I see 4GB DDR3 1600 for $9 each. Your motherboard probably has four ram slots, so you could install 16GB of ram for $36 (plus tax). But why stop there? I see 8GB DDR3 1600 for $11, s for $44 (plus tax) you could have 32GB of ram. Or you could get four 16GB DDR3 1600 for $68. That’s twice as much ram for just 55% more money. And it would be like owning a completely new computer. And now that you know what you’re looking for, it’s possible that you’ll find the same product for less money elsewhere. You might save $5 if you look on Amazon, for instance.

Native version still works perfectly fine for me w/AMD GPU. Pretty sure it was also fine when I had an NVidia system too.

Can you run this successfully in windows?

Those specs are very low. Maybe base game and nothing else and it might work for a few tiles, but I'm sure it will bog down quickly. I doubt your 4-core/4-thread CPU isn't going to cut it, let alone 6GB RAM, and 1GB video card is going to struggle, although this game is very light on the GPU, so it is likely the best part of your rig for CS1.

But if it runs in windows well enough for you, Linux should too.
