Ground Control Anthology

Ground Control Anthology

Unit ranks and awards?
As someone who grew up playing this amazing game something like 20-23 years ago and just now found out about "Ground Control Anthology" and started playing it again I have a question that much younger me was always wondering about.

Does the rank and awards/medals given to your units do anything for them, like make them better in any way, such as increased health, damage, and so on?

Or is it just there to make you feel better about a job well done, knowing how awesome that one unit of marines really is and how many dawnie scum it has killed?
Because it totally does that for me.

They are supposed to hit better and thus do more damage. TBH, I didn't see much of a difference, but then I was busy with commanding my units most of the time.
To quote the printed manual that comes with the original game:

Squads and Experience
Each Squad that survives a mission receives experience depending on its performance in the mission. Experience is accumulated over missions and affects the efficiency of a Squad. A veteran Squad will have increased ACCURACY, STEALTH, PERCEPTION and inflict more DAMAGE than a fresh Squad. Use your Squads wisely and make sure to build a balanced and experienced Battle Group. Note that Squads do not gain any experience in the multiplayer game.

I'm not completely certain about this, but inexperienced squads do appear to shoot a lot more at the ground around a target than experienced ones.
