I have been playing a bit and can't seem get to Canada, so is it even real?

Really my only complaint is that in the majority of playthroughs I've never been able to afford anything at the majority of trading camps I've visited. I'm not sure if this is poorly implemented, or intentional to create a more dire sense of difficulty, or maybe if trading camps are only really there for players who lose the rest of their party and suddenly have food to spare. Or maybe trading camps just solely for the longer "increased days to Canada" modes where wealth is more likely. Game is a master...

My cousin and I tried to play in coop mode but we couldn't. We play on different computers so we tried to use Steam's remote play but it still didn't work. does anyone know what I need to do to play multiplayer?
