So it might just be me, but I don't see much value in utilizing troops unless you have an overwhelming excess of stars, and can afford to use them as tools to slow down the enemy (like the boss offers). Otherwise they're cheap, yes, but they're disposable and tend to die easily - which turn them into a star sink that conflicts with your permenent buildings.
