Bring Back the Ability to Manually Bypass Theater
VRTheater is a good program for the people who need to use it for one or two games, but for those of us who need to be able to access our desktop for long periods of time with good fps (something the direct desktop streams from the menus still don't have unfortunately) the ability to turn it off is extremely needed.

It also (apparently) interferes with programs like VorpX and other similar flat-to-vr mods/programs, though I haven't seen this myself.

Seconded, on this otherwise it's bloat for the users who don't use It.
+1 bring it back ! this is ABSURD to remove this option, virtual desktop cant be used because of this !

Please give us the option to select whether to use desktop theatre or not.
I agree with Ember, this causes a very high overhead for people who don't use it.

We absolutely need control over Theatre mode, including the ability to disable it, for all programs, game and non-game alike. The fact that, right now, SteamVR is mindlessly forcing my VR headset's *configuration utility* of all things into Theatre mode is peak clown show.

+1 Just decided to give a VR workflow a try. I figured that since I don't have multiple physical rooms to work in versus play games in, I would try using VR to change my environment, which helps me get in the right headspace. However, any time I have to open anything in Steam (such as Tabletop Sim) it kicks me out of Bigscreen.
Valve are u crazy? I got 4090 and crystal, and after your update my games are not playble at all, even if i rename the Theatre.exe. Come on guys!

Wow I just want to give a shout out to the developers for totally ruining my VR mod gaming experiences and all for a theater screen which makes absolutely no sense to me for VR gaming. And I hope the developer that game up with the idea to not let us disable the screen will get a huge fat raise because boy do they deserve it. This is why I can't convenience my friends to play VR because they don't want to deal with the headaches that come with it. I'm about to join them.

I have no idea how as a steamvr developer you can not realize its a bad idea with so many vr mods for games out there

I'm a dev and need to consider UX in my work. That said, how the heck did the idea of blocking the user's ability to see what is in VR by shoving a curved screen of the desktop in our faces ever get past the first sprint planning meeting???

I mean, seriously? It's blocking my ability to run what I want to run, and it's _exactly_ as if someone was standing in front of me so I can't see the TV, because this thing IS blocking me from what I need to see.

Who thought this kind of thing was a good idea, were they on muscle relaxers in the meeting? Because anyone who would decide to do this while clear headed doesn't belong within ten miles of decisions regarding UX.

Un-be-lieveable

I hate the new stupid update with Steam VR Theatre mode. It has ruined my X-Plane & MSFS VR flight experience. Why on earth would the Devs add this? No one wants it. It kills FPS. I have gone from 45 FPS to 10 FPS. I now get CTD every flight. VR is now unplayable. Also, I don't wish to see the large theatre screen in the menu background. This change should be optional. The users decision to have it on or off, and not just added on. WTF...PLEASE REMOVE!! Thank you

For anyone curious, it appears that the beta has this option, you'll need to opt-in, but it's under:

Steamvr settings -> Dashboard -> Bottom Option

Hope this helps

this should not be an advanced option, this should literally be an opt-in or a pop up when launching a game when steamvr is open

I do not want this **** starting. I have modded Portal 2 VR and this annoyance is reappearing.

Just ran into this myself today. Where is the option in the game properties to disable the theater?? Why was this option removed? It might be returning in a beta under the advanced settings, but I don't understand why it can't be done on a per-game basis.
