Overgrowth

Overgrowth

Overgrowth never found its legs
I love the fighting mechanics of this game, but the main game modes especially the campaign are just pitiful. The plot and characters are so dry and cliche, and fighting one enemy then going to a loading screen to fight one more enemy before another loading screen is utterly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ heinous. The stealth mechanics are as simple as can be and you're pretty much forced to use them unless you can fight 6 enemies at once, which you probably can't. Well, at least you couldn't if the game didn't have the terrible leg cannon move. That move strips the game's combat of all its complexity. Enemies barely know how to respond to it and the auto lock makes it so easy to use. It completely misses the basic idea of risk versus reward, the only risk being if you accidentally fling yourself off of a ledge, which can be avoided pretty easily with the application of a few IQ points. With that mod that makes it so you have to manually aim it, or the one that lets AI use it and nerfs its power, at least then it comes closer to being fair. And after that mod, the game's mechanics are pretty much perfect. There are still some janky physics here, some overextended weapon hitboxes there, but it doesn't detract too much from how fun and quick the combat is. And seeing as how this game's strength is clearly combat, not writing, it's a huge pity the arena mode wasn't made the focus of the game. Fleshing that out with better arenas, more fight ideas, fight gimmicks, etc, would've been what this game needed over a lame story about a boohoo tragic warrior lose all he friends :(((( and go on epic revenge quest where he kill everyone!!! :DDD but he actually become bad guy???? :OOOO

I agree with a lot of your points, I think the best option would be a tickbox in the menu for "op bunny kick" or something similar, even if they left it on as the default. I think something that overgrowth had that still gave it some kind of legs for me was the inclusion of an easy way to create community produced content, the fandom of this game came up with super creative mods that improved the game a lot, like the one you mentioned and also storytelling like therium, etc. and gave me a reason to keep playing for a long time. Just thought that was worth a mention too :)

Honestly love the leg cannon move, but otherwise spot on with the critique

Especially when it comes to the story. Dear lord does it take itself way too seriously for a group of bunny fellas. Ain't saying it needs MCU quips every five minutes or have them laughing off every kill, but a bit of levity would have been nice.
Instead of a rebel trek through enemy lands followed by a forced slavery competition to the death, could have just had it be about an aspiring monk or fighter traveling through the world to find a martial arts tournament to prove their strength. Not perfect, but hot damn would it have been more palatable than the edge-fest we got here, especially when it delves into topics like genocide or SA.

Not to throw too much flack, lord knows I don't release any of my writing to the public under any names for a reason. Still, why's the cute bunny game gotta be so edgy man?

The absolute only thing that irked me about the plot will always be that Turner and the black cat so easily agree that they must fight each other to the death despite being practically unstoppable.
I get the manly tears stuff where it's like "one of us must make it to kill this specific hombre" but it just felt unnecessary when there was no leverage forcing them to, like a hostage or something.

i cant tell if i like this game or hate it. I got it cause i suddenly remembered watching markiplier play it years ago as a kid and wanted to try it. also this game is harder than dark souls. i died atleast 1000 times completing the first campaign. a lot of those were failing at platforming and then dying cause i got confused where i needed to go and kept trying different directions before i figured it out. The combat is intresting idk if im just bad or if the combat is bad. after awhile i got better and started baing able to do some sick moves. The combat with the big bad cat lady at the end was stupid as i was able to keep a sword form the dogs so i just one shotted her instantly and then spent 30 minuets lost trying find out how to leave.

Legit Lugaru is somehow a better game it is crazy
god it makes me sad looking at the youtube dev log and seeing the crazy stuff they had planned for this game. then they slap together a mediocre main story level set and call it a full release.

So about jump kick,(assuming we're talking about the hardest game difficulty here) that move is practically unusable unless you're using an unreliable technique or taking an enemy off guard. Otherwise, they'll just run away the moment you have a bit of air under your feet. Or they'll throw a weapon at you. Killing you instantly. The only time I find jump kick spammable is against wolves, but it's a necessity, considering wolves just tank all your other attacks and just out-speed you before you can land a hit. Timing is crucial against wolves, 'cuz if you ♥♥♥♥ up, you'll just get one or two shotted. Heavy risk, good reward.

Only in the easier difficulties have I found jump kicks to be a powerful as you describe.

When it comes to stealth, I honestly think the stealth is unimportant in Overgrowth. I can only think of a max of 5 of the 29 levels that require stealth in Overgrowth's campaign. Stealth is largely ignoble in Therium-2 as you're literally given a choice to go with the rip and tear route. And I honestly can't remember what Lugaru Story levels require stealth, but I can't imagine it's more than 3.

I think that Overgrowth would've been a lot worse if it focused on the arenas more. I have downloaded many mods and have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ around in the level editor plenty, and while fighting a ♥♥♥♥ ton of enemies can and has been a lot of fun, I can't say that it's more fun than playing the campaigns. Not only are the campaigns whole ass levels, which allows me to poke and prod the edges to see just how far I can go, which I've spent and good amount of time just exploring the map and testing it's limits. But the levels also have many gameplay styles. There are the parkour sections, there are the largely ignorable stealth sections, and there are the combat sections. The combat is amazing, but I don't think it carries the whole game. (I do agree that weapons need their wack ass hitboxes toned down)

Overgrowth's story however... I think it's fine. I think it's serviceable. I do think the campaigns' stories do get progressively more interesting though. Especially Drika's story. But only with the context of everything you've played before.
