Could it be that there is an epidemic of narcissism? Could some people take it to extremes such that they develop narcissistic personality disorder?

Maybe this would be a good time for a couple of definitions.

Narcissism is defined as excessive preoccupation with or admiration of oneself. synonym: conceit.

According to the Mayo Clinic,

People suffering from narcissistic personality disorder have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance. They need and seek too much attention and want people to admire them. People with this disorder may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others. But behind this mask of extreme confidence, they are not sure of their self-worth and are easily upset by the slightest criticism.

Does this describe the phenomenon you are observing?

Now, if you are asking why we are in the midst of an epidemic of narcissism well there are many factors to consider. I do not think it is a stretch to say that social media is designed to feed into people's egos and encourage their narcissistic tendencies.

I'd say its the simplest answer. Money. The more attention they get, the more views, the more ad revenue.

You in intro: "twitch streamers" I think you were talking about streamers.
Anyway, I wasn't intending to reference streamers intentionally. I still make the point that people want their site popular. Popular enough to get recognized by YouTube or whatever to pay to put ads on it.

As already mentioned, money. Marketing firms pay thousands of "influencers" to promote whatever these firms are being paid to promote. Government subsidized NGO's pay thousands of "influencers" to push propaganda. The US government paid "influencers" directly for this as admitted in 2020. Corporations are paying many thousands of "influencers" to advertise their products. Then the small accounts that are simply looking for revenue outside of sponsors, through views or "superchats".
