How do you use them, Is it farther in the game than I am right now or do they do nothing

Store and Gems > Gems > Scroll down.

Save for the bottom 2 upgrades (max them out) then spread out with damage, kill gold, and the others.

Thank you, I didn't read it all apparently, thought it was just buying stuff with real money

It's intentionally designed that way. Sucks, but it's the way it is. It should be another tab in "Upgrades."

I was also puzzled at the beginning, then discovered where things are.
After all this is a mobile game, the UI is thought for mobile use, and paying for resources : you can spend resources where you buy them.

I don't think that synergy gem upgrade is worth it. 1500 gems is too mush for it. If you want quick progression this way is much better: 5-10 to both damage and kill gold > 1-2 exp > full skill power > max damage and kill gold > max exp > max synergy

Synergy rounds up on Skill Power, so it's quite nice for that. (1 > 1.5 ^ 2, 2 > 3, 3 > 4.5 ^ 5, etc.)

Synergy is less effective than damage at the beginning. Damage and gold income allow to progress much much faster. Invest in synergy once you unlock Divine towers.

I would max, first, Kill Gold, Credits, and Skill Power, then Damage and Synergy

All towers have skills that do various things, such as freeze enemies or provide buffs to towers, skill power makes them better
