TKOM TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
I figured with all the issues going around I'd drum up a small little troubleshooter to help out other players who might be crashing or getting a bug. Just follow this list starting at the top and going down. Do the step run the game if still having the issue move to the next step and repeat.

NOTE:
This game tends to run better on Windows 7, you may experience additional issues or crashes when running the game on Windows 10.

Prerequisites - Certain games or programs may require the following:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 - 2017 x86 & x64 Versions (If using 64-bit Win install both x86/x64)
.NET Framework 4.7.2 or latest
Microsoft XNA Framework 4.0 or latest
Microsoft DirectX 9.0c

(Take On Mars redistributable folder contains Visual C++ 2013 and DirectX 9.0c Jun 2010. Make sure you have these versions of VC++ and DirectX installed.)

Uninstall/Reinstall Steam - LAST RESORT ONLY!!!

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9609-OBMP-2526
|
Follow the steps to uninstall steam manually to remove *everything* in case TKOM leaves files behind. (You will need to uninstall and remove all other games and save files)
|
Fixed workshop desync issue (Subbed items never download)
Origineel geplaatst door Dram:

Accessing Steam Data issue, it is something that crops up every now and again. It happens intermittently and is related to whether the game can access the data from Steam. It sometimes occurs that it cannot (which is annoying but something we have no control over). Restarting steam helps.

Step 1. Disable any mods or addons in-game, unsubscribe on the workshop and delete/move them from here:

<Drive Letter>:\Steam\userdata\<Your Steam ID>\244030\local\addonpacks

or

Default steam install location inside Program Files (Program Files(x86) / steam...)

or

Go to the Steam Library for TKOM, click the 'Play' button, click 'Open Launcher' then 'Play', once the window pops up you'll be on the 'Addons' tab, uncheck the boxes below and then run the game. This will disable and turn off your mods/addons. You can then leave them off or enable them one by one to see which is the culprit.
|
|
|
- Whenever a build is pushed out from the test branch, mods and addons will always be the first thing you need to check if the game crashes.

Step 2. Running either exe in compatability mode

Step 2a. Running compatability troubleshooter (Windows 10)

Step 3. Running either exe in administrator mode

Step 4. Running either exe in both compatability/admin mode

How to set compatability mode:
https://www.windows10forums.com/articles/compatibility-mode.7/

The executables can be found here:

(Look for TKOM.exe or TKOM_dev.exe)

<Drive Letter>:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Take On Mars

or

Default steam install location inside Program Files (Program Files(x86) / steam...)

Can't find TKOM.exe or TKOM dev.exe Look here:

https://www.howtogeek.com/205086/beginner-how-to-make-windows-show-file-extensions/

Compatability Mode Fixes:

Device error 80070057 crash:
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/244030/discussions/1/135509124602619004/

Windows 10 CTD / general

'rainbow' colors for those running Windows 10.

Step 5. Verifying the game cache in the steam library

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

Step 6. Resetting the game settings through TKOM launcher

Click the 'Play' button on the 'Take on Mars' Steam library page, then left click 'Open Launcher', look for the 'Reset game settings' button and left click it. Click 'Yes' if asked about resetting the game settings. Now try running the game again.

Step 7. Deleting save files or moving them out of the game directory

Known to fix the 'too many saves' crash.

Game saves are found here:

<Drive Letter>:\Steam\userdata\<Your Steam ID>\244030\local\<Your TkoM Profile Name>

or

Default steam install location inside Program Files (Program Files(x86) / steam...)

Step 8. Skip loading a save game and start anew

Several updates lately have changed config, controller and file locations. Running an old save could cause the game to try calling missing files and result in a crash.

Step 9. Check the error.log, crash.log or console.log all found here:

<Drive Letter>:\Steam\userdata\<Your Steam ID>\244030\local

or

Default steam install location inside Program Files (Program Files(x86) / steam...)
|
|
|
These logs contain information related to the game if or when a crash occurs and can be helpful in troubleshooting issues other steps may not cover or resolve. Recent crashes or any other info are the last few lines in each log. Post the log file to 'Bug Reports' along with any additional information you can provide. ie. System specs, mods/addons you use, which executable of the game you ran (reg or dev) etc. (If the post you make is over 1000 chars use pastebin.com )

Step 10. Try running the game using the dev executable. Found here:

<Drive Letter>:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Take On Mars\TKOM_dev.exe

or

Default steam install location inside Program Files (Program Files(x86) / steam...)
|
|
|
If your game is crashing still but the error message doesn't say much try running the developer exe as any crash in the dev exe will likely show more information.

Step 11. If you experience crashing or sluggish performance while running the game on a laptop. Try this:

Run the Dev mode using the 'Play' button in the steam library or run TKOM_dev.exe and goto the in-game options and turn off fullscreen.

Developer mode exe is found here:

<Drive Letter>:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Take On Mars\TKOM_dev.exe

or

Default steam install location inside Program Files (Program Files(x86) / steam...)

or

Look for ccsettings.xml in the above file locations, open with notepad and change 'fullscreen = 1 to fullscreen = 0' then save the file and close it. Try running the game again.
|
|
|
This has been reported to help those running the game on a latop with integrated / AMD(ATI) or Nvidia graphics cards.

Step 12. If you experience black textures or missing textures ie. being able to "see" through something.

Try the following:

Go to the in-game options and look for '3D Resolution - 1x' change this setting from 1x to 1.2x or higher.

Step 13. If you're unable to take a screenshot using the default screenshot key (F12).

Try the following:

Set the game to run in windowed mode and not fullscreen. (Reported by Astronaut)

Step 14. If your game crashes or won't start with the following error:

ERROR : Device error : 88760868
|
|
ERROR : Device error : 88760868 Crashes:
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/244030/discussions/0/412448158141837311/

|
|
Try uninstalling/reinstalling, or updating your video card drivers.

Step 15. If your game crashes with the following error:

Function: 'SetTKOMSoundVolume'
Stack trace:
scripts/Global/GlobalFuncs.h:851
scripts/Entities/SoundPoint.h:54
scripts/Entities/SoundPoint.h:92
scripts/Entities/SoundPoint.h:109

|
|
'SetTKOMSoundVolume' crash:
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/244030/discussions/0/1621724915787473513/
|
|
Try upgrading or rolling back your video card or sound card drivers.
(Reported by pepe143)
|
|
NOTE:
Newer graphics cards use HDMI or DisplayPort, both HDMI and DisplayPort transfer video and sound signal from the video card to the monitor. Because of this you need to make sure both the video and audio drivers for the video card are installed correctly. Also if you are running the latest/newest drivers you might want to try rolling back to a previous version, as the latest and greatest isn't always the best choice.

Step 16. If your game crashes with the following error:

X3DAudio1_6.dll was not found
|
|
Post with X3DAudio1_6.dll error:
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/244030/discussions/1/1621724915808533030/
|
|
Try installing DirectX or reinstalling DirectX.
DX Web Installer: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

Step 17. Camera/View is spinning unable to control/move astronaut:

Close TKOM and unplug your game controller: Joystick, Gamepad, Xbox Controller, Racing Wheel, Flight Yoke, Rudder Pedals, etc. from your PC and start the game again.

If the problem persists:

Go here:

\Steam\userdata\<Your Steam ID>\244030\local\<TKOM Profile Name>\controls

And delete all the files inside that folder. Then start the game and check the camera issue.

-----

Also check:

\Steam\userdata\<Your Steam ID>\241100

This is the Steam controller config directory. You can try deleting whatever files are located there or copy/move them out and then try loading TKOM after you restart Steam.

-----

Here is a list of all the folders related to controllers running under steam:

https://steamdb.info/search/?a=app&q=Steam+Controller+Config

These are all found in \Steam\userdata\<Your Steam ID>\XXXXXX

Just replace the X's with the folder number from the list.

Do this as a last resort only:

Step 18. Uninstall the game / Reinstall

Uninstalling the game and making sure the directory 244030 is removed or moved elsewhere and then reinstall (moved incase you want to keep saves/scenarios/mods, also if this folder is left mods and addons will not have been removed. Uninstalling the game doesn't delete this directory. Which can results in mods/addons still being present and still crashing the game out.) (See Step 1 above for removing mods/addons during an uninstall.)
|
|
|
- Sometimes starting from scratch is the best course of action, we can muddy up our games very quickly by adding mods and other such things.

Please!!! By all means if you know of further ways to fix issues or things you may have done yourself to get your game going again share them. The more tips/tricks the better.

This issue is being fixed in the next build or so. The workaround is not to interrupt the dialog if the astronaut is talking and don't save your gave during dialog either. This is what I've read others had to do. Also don't hold a movement key while dialog is running as this will cause the fall through surface.
