Steam Backup Issue
I purchased Invisible Inc. today and installed the game, the game's cache folder was properly named "InvisibleInc" and located in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common". After installation I continued to make a Steam Backup, as I usually do with all my games (for when I need to reinstall the game later). The Steam Backup finished normally, and created a folder named "Invisible, Inc." at the backup location (on a 2nd HDD). This folder however were inaccessible, Windows give the following error upon trying to access the folder:

"<folder location> refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location."

This folder's size is zero and contains no files at all, so I'm wondering where did steam save the the files it supposedly backed up since the OS can't even find or address the folder's location.

Now, I might be wrong but I suspect that that folder name used for the backup is invalid and not supported in Windows. The steam backup process doesn't give the user an option to specify the folder name used, so with who does this fault lie? i.e. with Klei Entertainment or with Valve?

The main issue here is that I can't make a steam backup of this game! This needs to be fixed from either Valve or Klei Entertainment's side, so that I and all the other users that purchased the game can make a backup. Also the minor inconvenience that I'm now seemingly stuck with this folder on my backup HDD that can't be accessed, renamed or deleted. I'll probably have to format the drive to correct this, hopefully a low level format won't be neccesary.

Please respond to this issue as soon as possible! :steamsad:

Hey RoerMyNie, I'm wondering what system you are using to do the backup, is it the built in Steam backup system from the dropdown on Steam?

I just went through the backup process myself and got the same problem. It did ask me what file name I wanted to use. A second time I tired it using the name "invisibleinc", no spaces or punctuation and it worked fine. So you should be able to back up the game that way.

We'll let Steam know about that problem.

As for the broken folder, when I find a way to get rid of it, I'll let you know.

This worked for me. used at a command prompt:

rmdir /q /s "\\?\\C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Backups\Invisible, Inc."

Thank you to both Homedrone and Ryuu-senpai for the valuable support you provided.

To answer Homedrone: Yes I'm using the Steam Backup system from the dropdown menus.

It seems I always just clicked through the steam backup options without realising that you could in fact specify your own folder name, thank you for pointing that out. I made a new backup specifying my own folder name and it worked just fine. ;-p

I tried a few DOS commands myself, but it didn't work, I received errors explaining that the location is unavailable or inaccessible. The solution you guys provided work perfectly, thank you.

I'm familiar with most DOS commands, but I don't understand the "\\?\\..." part of the command. It would be nice if you guys can set me straight on that as well. lol

These guys got the solution/work-around for anyone running into this problem, just do as they explained and it will work! Cheers guys :D

never use steam backup - its buggy as hell.
I ever dont use cloud saving, cuz its corrupted my save files few times (not for this game)

Hey *Yuki*, thank you for the comment.

Some of my steam backups have been corrupted as well, and you won't know until you try to use it, but I haven't figured out any alternative method.

In the past I could just copy/backup a game's cache folder. When needed I'll start the install/download in the Library, pause the download, copy the backup to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\<game cache folder>", then verify the game's cache files and the game will be installed unless there are new updates to download as well.

The above method does not work any more after Valve changed things: Steam now use a temporary folder while downloading a game and then create the usual game cache folder afterwards. Copying the backup to either the temporary folder or the usual game cache location had no effect in my tests (a while back). Steam will just continue downloading the game and ignore whatever you do.

Now this is my experience tackling game backup solutions. I'm unsure and curious how your making a cloud saving solution work, because as far as I know, steam will ignore any files you copy to those locations while downloading a game.

If you or anyone reading this thread have a better solution for backups, I'll really appreciate your imput and advise on this. :steamhappy:

Try to use third party backup tool?

Well in my opinion, you'll experience the same issues using a 3rd party backup tool. Because you'll probably use the same method explained above (i.e. starting the install/download, pause the download, etc), thus it will be similar to copying the game's cache folder to any of those locations.

If you copy/restore the game's cache folder with a 3rd party tool without starting the install/download from the Library, Steam won't even be aware that the game is there. Also you won't be able to verify the game's cache files, because according to steam the game have not been installed or downloaded yet.

I might be missing something, perhaps you can explain the process/method that is working for you at the moment, then I can test it on my side with a small game. :steamhappy:

Backed up full game, put files into its folder on new system, started to download from steam - gaben found exists files, verified and downloaded nothing (except for tf2 and other games with steamworks drm - there I was forced to redownload executable and few other files. Not full game anyway)
