Story:

I came into Rogue City as a casual fan, having only seen the first RoboCop film about five years ago. I really enjoyed that movie, but I don’t have any deep-rooted nostalgia for the franchise. With that in mind, I was curious to see how the game would handle its storytelling, especially since it’s set between RoboCop 2 and 3, two films I haven’t seen. While I expected plenty of callbacks and references I wouldn’t fully grasp, I was surprised by how well the game stands on its own.
Despite the clear presence of fan service, the story remains accessible to newcomers. There are undoubtedly moments packed with deeper significance for longtime fans, whether it’s a character, location, or line of dialogue, but at no point did I feel like I was being left out. If anything, Rogue City does a great job of making you want to go back and watch the movies, rather than making you feel like you NEED to have already seen them to appreciate the experience.
From a narrative standpoint, The main plot isn't groundbreaking in the slightest, with some straightforward, predictable and/or cheesy moments, but it's not so over-the-top that it doesn't fit the tone of RoboCop. The game leans into that classic mix of grit, action, and absurdity that defined the first film, making the experience feel authentic even if some twists are easy to see coming.
Furthermore, something I really think is one of the strongest yet subtle aspects of the game’s storytelling is its humor. It’s not in-your-face or forced, but rather sprinkled throughout in subtle ways that enhance the world. It never undercuts the seriousness of the story and instead reinforces the franchise’s signature tone.
Overall, I really enjoyed the narrative. While it plays heavily into fan service, it never alienates newcomers, making it a great entry point for those who may not be deeply familiar with the franchise. If anything, this game makes me want to dive deeper into the trilogy before jumping into New Game+, which is a testament to how well it captures the RoboCop spirit.

Gameplay:

First off, this isn’t an AAA game, and yes, it has a bit of jank, but that doesn't stop the gameplay from being an absolute blast.
At its core, this is a first-person shooter with very solid gunplay and a good variety of weapons, but it does a GREAT job of making you FEEL like RoboCop. You’re not a nimble super-soldier zipping around the battlefield, you’re a slow, stomping, unstoppable tank. The game leans into this by giving you tools that make combat feel weighty and impactful. RoboCop’s fist, for example, is a powerhouse, allowing you to literally punch enemies across the room, and his visor HUD adds a great layer of immersion while giving you useful information, combat or otherwise.
One of my favorite feature, however, is how you can use the environment to your advantage. Whether it’s throwing entire dumpsters or ricocheting bullets off wall panels to take down enemies in creative ways, there’s always something fun to experiment with. And the destruction? Surprisingly great. Walls crumble, furniture flies, debris scatters and every gunfight feels satisfyingly chaotic. It’s simple, but that’s what makes it work so well.
Beyond the shooting, the game adds some depth with a choice system that lets you decide what kind of RoboCop you want to be. Your choices influence the story and how characters react to you, adding a solid layer of replayability.
Structurally, the game is a bit old-school in design, but this is in no way a negative. The levels are small and contained, with hub areas you revisit and some interior sections hidden behind brief loading screens. You can pick up health packs, and there’s even an end-of-level scoring system that tells you what all you completed as well as missed. Plus, side quests are plentiful for the scale of the game, but never feel like filler. In fact, many of them reinforce the RoboCop fantasy this game is built around. Little moments like issuing parking tickets, rescuing stray cats, etc., add charm and humor, balancing out the game’s heavier action.

World:

Rogue City does a fantastic job of capturing the gritty feel of Old Detroit. The world design feels authentic to the time period, with a mix of neon-lit streets, rundown alleys, and corporate-controlled districts that make it feel like a living city.
One of the strongest aspects of the level design is how it balances open-ended exploration with more linear, story-driven sequences. The semi-open world areas give you a sense of freedom without overwhelming you with pointless distractions. You can patrol the streets, do side quests, and interact with NPCs, which makes you feel like an actual enforcer of the law rather than just a player moving between missions. However, in the grand scheme, it would have been nicer if there were actually more to do/interact with in the city besides the "Protect and Serve" quests and picking up stolen goods/evidence, especially since you return there multiple times.
The levels themselves are designed with RoboCop’s playstyle in mind. Unlike traditional FPS games where speed and cover mechanics are key, here you move like a walking tank: slow, deliberate, and unstoppable. The environments accommodate that by providing tight corridors for brutal shootouts and open spaces that let you soak in the atmosphere while delivering metal justice. The destructible environments also add to the immersion, making combat feel weighty as bullets tear through walls and debris flies everywhere.

Visuals:

This is a visually stunning game; the level of detail in the environments is fantastic, from the way lights reflect off rain-slicked streets to the realistic glow of a fiery explosion. Yet, what really blew me away were the small touches: particle effects flying from bullet impacts, the thick smoke curling out of your gun's barrel after unloading a magazine, and seeing limbs get blown off criminal scumbags. These details add an incredible sense of atmosphere and weight to every firefight.
That being said, not everything is on the same level of polish. While I'll say the main characters look great, some NPC models clearly didn’t get the same attention, and the frequent reuse of certain faces was a bit immersion-breaking. It’s understandable, though, AA studios have to pick their battles, and in this case, they prioritized the right things. The overall presentation, lighting, and effects more than make up for these minor gripes, and the gunfights are where this game SHOULD shine visually, anyway.

Music/Sound Design:

If there’s another thing Rogue City absolutely nails, it’s the music and sound design. From top to bottom, the soundtrack is amazing. It's perfectly suited to the gritty, dystopian vibe of RoboCop. Whether you’re patrolling the streets of Old Detroit or unloading your Auto-9 into some lowlife scum, the music always elevates the experience, making you feel like the unstoppable force of justice that RoboCop is meant to be.
But the real MVP here? The sound design. Easily one of my favorite aspects of the entire game. Every little detail, even the heavy metallic thud of RoboCop’s footsteps and the clanking of ladders as you climb, adds to the immersion. The weight and power of every movement are perfectly captured, making you FEEL like you’re inside that hulking cybernetic body. The gunfire is punchy, explosions are satisfying, and even the ambient city sounds help bring the city to life.
And let’s talk about the biggest W: Peter Weller returning as RoboCop. Hearing his voice in this role again is nothing short of legendary. His performance brings classic authenticity to the character.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the rest of the voice acting. There are occasional glimpses of quality, but for the most part, it ranges from mediocre to outright bad. And not in a fun, cheesy ‘80s action movie way, just bad. The worst offenders? The Torch Heads. I HATED every second of their voice work.

When I bought Robocop at a very good discount and started playing on Steam Deck, I thought that it would not handle the game and it would not be interesting, but it turned out that the game is running normally, I would not say that it is ideal, but for 30 FPS in the lock you can play it. The plot in the game is not bad and not good, it is average normal, you can really feel the nostalgia from the film, even some scenes were taken from the film, I definitely recommend the game to fans of films or to play in the evening
