I know I played the Deponia games in chronological order originally... but I don't remember what that order was.... so whatever.
I think of them all as one game in essence, and it was a good game. It just happens to be split into multiple parts.

A Disappointing and Disturbing End to a Promising Series

The first two Deponia games were charming point-and-click adventures—cleverly designed, occasionally frustrating (as is the genre), but ultimately fun. Sure, the humor could get a little juvenile at times, but it walked that fine line where you weren’t always sure whether the main character, Rufus, was just a clueless idiot or something a bit darker. That ambiguity gave the games a unique edge.

But Goodbye Deponia, the third installment, takes a nosedive off that edge and crashes hard. The humor isn’t just unfunny anymore, it’s offensive. The puzzles feel like they were thrown together without logic or care. Worst of all, the game crosses lines that shouldn’t be crossed, even under the guise of satire.

At one point, Rufus sells a Black woman into forced labor, to pose as a monkey. Let that sink in. That’s not edgy, it’s not dark humor, it’s dehumanizing and racist. And if that wasn’t enough, the game tiptoes into even more disturbing territory, including flirtation that feels alarmingly inappropriate toward children.

What happened to Daedalic? How did a once-beloved studio go from creating quirky, imaginative adventures to releasing this trainwreck? Rufus is no longer the lovable idiot with questionable morals, he’s a full-blown, irredeemable jerk dripping in sexism, racism, and cruelty.

As a long-time fan of the studio, I’m deeply disappointed. Goodbye Deponia isn’t just a bad game, it's an abomination wrapped in punchlines that should never have made it past the writing room.

“Goodbye Deponia,” indeed. And possibly goodbye, Daedalic.
