ROME
You start with very little and you find yourself surrounded by Roman legions, bandits and other Barbarian Tribes... sometimes you are lucky: Rome doesn't bother at all about you, other times Roman Legions attack you after a few rounds and you are dead even without a chance to talk to them. Very realistic, and very masochistic, but...is that normal? I think it should be amended. It's quite annoying to throw my time this way. I understood after a few games that I don't have to accept the friendship of other Barbarian Tribes because this upsets Rome, and you don't have to stay too close to their borders, but when you have nothing to blame on yourself what else can you do?

Diplomacy is broken. Interaction with the computer is largely arbitrary. Don’t even bother with any lore because it’s poor at best and incomplete

The best course of action is to reroll until you get a good resource map and only weak/ non playing Civs near you.

It’s important to also save scum a lot so if the computer turns on you, you can reset and create a defense

Is there a way to make peace with Rome (or any other faction) in new version (1.4)?

I am playing Vandals who are supposed to be permanently allied to Romans, but they are still sending legions to sack my settlements. Of course, they are also sending gifts of 40 gold, or 5 food, every few years, so I guess it's all working as intended! /s

Diplomacy is completely broken. If romans attack, all you can do is just pack up and resettle somewhere else. (and that part probably *is* intended)

You can move your soldiers out of the area and let them stomp your buildings. They will go away after a while and you can repair . Not ideal but better than a reset

Well yeah, repairs are cheap enough, but chances are they will stay near your territory and keep sacking your structures 24/7. I guess if you don't repair your structures they might leave after a while.

I personally had an upgraded lancer at that point, so I slowly whittled them down by attacking them every time they were pillaging a structure (it was a pack of 5 legions). But if you're just starting out and only have access to hunters / archers.... yeah...

If you time it right you can bait them into chasing your settlement in winter. They will kill themselves because they don’t always encamp.

They won’t chase soldiers for some reason though .

is it me or all neutral factions appear as "neutral" so you can't understand who you wish to declare war upon?

I ran into that too yesterday. 4 neutrals . I declared war on all of them but could not attack any of them
