Jon Shafer's At the Gates

Jon Shafer's At the Gates

I'm coming to this game fresh...
I'll have the hype and excitement I had when I first heard this game mentioned a few years ago. I'm going into this with an open mind and an open heart. Often times, communities can scare away any new comers from coming into a game. Well... I'm going to come into this game head first! I'm going to be sweating with my heart beating abnormally high, and then I'll catch my breath and take a nap... all from this game.

Any advice for new comers?

Wait a year or two, hopefully it's more finished by then haha.

But imo the game is great despite its flaws. My advice is to just enjoy the game and accept it when the game crashes and start a new one, using the knowledge you learned from before.

Some important information, the challenge in the game is surviving and keeping your clans fed. Clans have families that grow semi-exponentially up to a max size, on Nightmare it's extremely challenging to keep up with it when most clans are close to max size, but that's also the fun. You need to figure out an economy in time, where you'll have to rely on multipliers and synergies.

It might seem like farmers make more than gatherers for example. But gatherers can be boosted much more easily. Nevermind I'm too lazy to type the rest

You might want to wait until the next update comes. The last one sort of borked diplomacy - I wouldn't be surprised if you find it quite frustrating to play the game due to a Roman Empire deciding to declare war on you.

Heh, this is roughly what I keep doing now since I've gotten it. It's got an odd charm that makes me keep going back. I also keep learning things through trial and error a bit so I've already restarted about a dozen times in the amount of time I've played so far.

Enjoying it though and I can see why the developer wants to finish it. It has a charm to it that I didn't feel when playing Civ VI.

even if this game does get fixed and finished, and that's a big IF, Jon has created so much bad will thru his actions the last 7 years that the game is not going to have any support.

Just load the last save it usually doesn't crash twice unless you do everything the exact same. If it keeps crashing I find turning off background programs as it is a bit harsh on only one processor (#1) so it is competing with other #1 processor using programs

Guide in the purple (bottom) section buffs almost everyone
Lore keeper allows for teching faster
Explore has a limited amount of work so either turn the clan into the lore keeper, guide, or a Trader once he has scouted enough of the local area

Oh and don't be afraid to pack up and move away. I started cornered and had to walk all summer to my new home
