What If
You started Civ with a warrior and a builder, but no settler?

You founded a city, but it gave you no resources?

You had no source of happiness, wood or food?

Your starting settler and warrior hated each other and wanted the other destroyed?

I think about the likelihood of any of these scenarios occurring in a Civ game as I'm restarting a game of AtG, yet again. How the complete randomness of your starting position and clans creates an instant no-win map, even if you don't know it.

I like the premise of the game. Can you win with what you've got? I like the gameplay, the scramble for food and getting your economics going.

But playing the game is like Russian roulette. Oh, lots of stone, excellent. Nope. None of my starting twelve clans wants to 1) leave the settlement; or 2) be a digger. No, they're all homebodies. Or they only want to do Agriculture, when there's only one berry bush. On top of that, they all hate being on a tile with anyone else.

What about a slight tweaking to make sure that at least your starting three clans have useful traits, or at least not wholly negative ones? (Only wants to do Agriculture. Resources deplete twice as fast.) My favorite grouping of contradictory traits, May commit crimes; will never commit crimes.

Since a large part of AtG is managing the demands, needs and desires of the different clans, players should at least be given a starting chance. But it's completely random whether your clans are worthwhile or useless and that matters tremendously in whether you are going to enjoy the game or simply restart, yet again.

Unfortunately the best part of the game is the start. Once you get past survival you realize the rest of the game is a clicking exercise

If you look at Jon’s twitter you’ll see he’s adding a difficulty setting; no meaningful content though . Another year and another disappointment

On the upside he’s taking vacation from doing nothing

Then considering the number of times I've restarted AtG, I've seen the best the game has to offer.

I’ll give you a tip; don’t upgrade from 12-18 clans until you have a surplus of at least 100 food. This may seem odd but the games’ balance is screwed up from the last update .

once you upgrade to 18 clans, make sure you have a fishing boat in the water and a scavenger to get the upgrade materials needed for the fisherman.

it may take 80 or more turns to do this. just relax and swap trades with the same clans as needed

Like all civ like games, its a little dependent on the roll, getting enough stone and food resources, an enemy close who will not roll you.....better yet you can rush him and repeat plunder him :/
