5 grapes will feed something like 25 families. By that point most of your older clans will have 5+ families, so multiply that by the number of clans you have and you'll see why it takes so much food to bump up your stockpile by a whole turn.
Most Probably you have a lot of food stored (like more than 60) and any food surplus gets eaten by Spoilage - the more food you have stored, the bigger amount is wasted - till almost 100% of surplus.
