Jon Shafer's At the Gates

Lombards.
Okay. How the heck do you play as the Lombard tribe? The idea that you start with all resources revealed is pretty cool, but due to the fact that you can't train any kind of forager means that you have to spend the first many, many turns just doing research, first to get a logger, and after you have a logger, then you can get a farmer or trapper. BUT... by the time you're able to get out a farmer, winter has arrived, you have six clans in your tribe and only two or three of them trained and you're already running at a pretty steep food deficit.

Am I missing some obvious strategy with them? Or are they just that difficult to play, that you have to rely on the pure luck of getting a clan that starts as some sort of resource forager?

They're intended to be tough, but yeah, might be too random right now. I'm going to look into rebalancing them in v1.2.

Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply. And I want to make it clear that I am really enjoying the game so far. Saw Quill18 play it, thought it looked cool.

Glad to hear it! Definitely some work to do on the game but I really do believe it's a lot of fun to play. :)

i play lombards all the time because of the challenge. i would not like to see them nerfed IMO

I wouldn't be looking to change them dramatically, just make them a bit less luck-dependent. Still want them to be tough.

Yeah, definietly don't want them to be "easy", I love a good challenge. But Clayffo, how do you play as Lombards? What you're strategy for them when starting out?

Here are some of my strategies:

The first thing i always do is buy 5 weapons and the rest in food (have to hope food is for sale). The thing is that winter is 10 turns, so you only have to generate 11 food to make it through winter.

you also have to resist the temptation to get mining online first. the focus needs to be security and food (hence the 5 weapons). after the first 20 turns or so you should have a farm and be generating assets that can be sold for food.

- if near water, i bring on a fisherman
- if in a wooded area, i get 2 loggers online and use the logs as currency to buy food at caravan
- if i roll a gatherer by luck, then problem solved with berries. you can scavenge anything with
Lombards if you roll someone with those skills
- Rome usually provides money or food to the lombards, so i also use that to carry me the first 20
turns
- build a farm first thing before winter, which can get you enough to make it through winter if there's wheat
nearby.
- sometimes you get lucky and find a goody hut with +5 food if you get an explorer early on.

End of the day there is a fair amount of luck in Lombards. you will usually run into a temporary famine condition unless there's fish right nearby. It really takes thinking out your positions before making decisions to succeed
