New Thief
It's time for a new Thief game like this one; not a simulator.

There is no working developer that currently shows any interest in making one.

Eidos sold it to Square-Enix, Square Enix sold it to Embracer. Embracer was a giant investment scam and split up into a bunch of smaller companies and the IP went to the restructured Crystal Dyanamics studio after it was spun off.

Crystal Dynamics only seems to be interested in making another Tomb Raider and Perfect Dark and is struggling to even produce those with recent layoffs.

No new thief in the works and if they do they need to refer to the original trilogy not this mess of a reboot.

Although deadly shadows had its issues it was still good this game was a commercial failure.

That's too bad about its success. I enjoyed the game very much. I thought for sure there would be another.

Play the original trilogy, outside of deadly shadow in terms of running the rest are fine with tfix light. After which you’ll understand why the reboot failed as it did.

Go play The Dark Mod.

Began replaying the original with a few enhancement mods. What a brilliant concept.

Check out the Styx franchise maybe.

I just bought Thief gold on gog because I love stealth games and wanted to give it a try. Jesus Christ that game was trash. It's easily the worst stealth game I have ever played. I know it's an old game and all that but man is it tedious. Everything feels clunky. None of the tools feel reliable. You never feel like you're in control of avoiding or ambushing enemies. It's just quicksave/quickload until the enemies move in a ways that allows you to blackjack them from behind. There's no cover system, no careful observation of the enemy to figure out the perfect timing to attack. God it's so terrible. I've played Styx, Desperados, Commandos, Blood West, Gloomwood and a bunch of other stealth games. I love the genre but man is the original thief game trash. i have yet to play the reboot but if it's anything close to the orgiginal I'm not surprised nobody seems to like it.

Honestly sound like your just bad at the game or its just not your thing. Because none of those things are issues in thief. But feel free to post on your feelings on official forums would be an entertaining afternoon at least.

I don't mind the difficulty. It's just tedious in every regard. In Styx snuffing out lights happens in a second. In Thief it just takes forever to pick the correct arrow, wind up the bow and aim. Whenever you mess up and are forced into combat in Styx you need two or three well timed blocks and then you can counter attack and finish the enemy. In Thief I would load whenever I ended up in a combat because having to poke the enemy 10 times and blocking them 20 times per combat just felt so boring. Maybe the game is a classic "because they did it first". But man, this aged like milk.

Thief is about being a well a thief granted some later levels can have forced combat, the game isn't about that you just blackjack and avoid combat not engage with it. Also it takes awhile to aim a bow compared to throwing sand because thief in general is slower paced game in first person. I would say to stick with sneaking and not fighting even the tutorial tells you its a last resort that should be avoided.

That seems to be your issue, because it sounds like you aren't using the stealth mechanics.

The main problem I have is that there doesn't seem to be as much agency as in other stealth games. For example most games will add things like bookshelfs that allow you to peek through them while the enemy can't see you, This way you can observe their movement patters and time your next move in accordance with what you've learned. In Thief there is no such thing. The only thing that matters is if you are hidden by a shadow or not when an enemy randomy decides to peek arround the corner. And I agree, stealth games should not necessarily be about killing everything that moves (though it can be fun to methodically clear and entire map of enemies). But still, should the player end up in a situation where they need to figth then the fights should feel good. Should they want to use the bow headshots should onehsot enemies. You can add enemies wearing helmets that prevent the player from landing headshots if you want. But having to shoot an enemy 5 times because the headshots won't register as such makes me not want to use the bow at all. When I bought the game I was hoping it would shorten the wait for Gloomwood but man, it certainly didn't.

Like I said stealth mechanics if you are in darkness you are essentially invisible to everyone. So being in a corner you can observe and hear where enemies are as you can hear there footsteps. No the game makes it clear you aren't a fighter if something happens you can either flash or outrun them as nothing can keep up with your speed/mobility. You want to game to be something it isn't and the devs present in the tutorial mission.

You want the game to be something it isn't, the game actively discourages you from combat.

I would curve your thoughts because you think you can play an assassin/rogue, you aren't.

Imo if you include a mechanic in the game it needs to be fun, no matter how rarely it is used. If a mechanic isn't fun remove it. Again I'm pointing to Styx. Combat vs one enemy is quite difficult. Versus two it is downright impossible. So you're actively discouraged from facign enemies head on. But nevertheless should you still end up in a situation where you need to fight it's always fun. And that's what I miss in thief. Why does it have so many mechanics that are so little fun that players actively avoid using them.

You can say that about a lot of games that said thief didn’t become a stealth game until way late in development. Fact is the game makes it clear especially on higher skills that combat should be avoided.

This game isn’t styx so it’s not relevant you want the game to play like something it’s not.

Also the “mechanic” you are focused on is combat thief is focused on stealth “murder is a mark of an amateur”. Idk maybe play it as a stealth game and not combat centric. Anyway this is getting of topic start your own thread on thief gold. Most would just repeat what I said and you’ll get free jester points.
