Hellish nightmare

Max your agility and run around like a freak to the soundtrack

I played the first time like a decade ago, with some friends in multiplayer. It didn't go well because we didn't understand how the multiplayer is buggy in certain ways (host should never alt-tab for one). That lasted just barely past the firs OS upgrade for reference.

Now I just finished going through with one friend, we are more experienced with problem solving, and found decent work arounds for the bugs. With this, it was still frustrating at times, but I was still able to enjoy the game, and we even beat it.

The game itself... oh man, I missed out back in the day. The atmosphere is amazing, just that eerie tension ramping up for combat pieces in a survival horror sci-fi setting. Bring in the story that kept drawing me in, even when the dated textures would occasionally break my immersion. Though the one track for the music that was a little too fast paced did not work out for me, even though it should have, given the context for the area. I just kept thinking it was from the movie Hackers, and could just picture spinning phone booths, as I was trying to navigate a small maze full of radiation. It ends on a cliff hanger, which makes me want to play the intended third game.

Now for the bad... the graphics at the time were probably pretty damn good, but they have not aged that well. Its just that early 3D graphics that were very low poly, and can look derpy at times. If you can forgive that, then you won't have an issue. The multiplayer is also very buggy, between desync issues when transitioning between areas, and transition switches just not working. We got used to it, and just saved before and after every new area, and initiated a transition when a door would fail to work for a client player.

I intend on buying and playing the more recent updated version of System Shock, and the remaster of System Shock 2, after having positive experiences -- even with all the bugs present in multiplayer only -- from this, my first proper play through of any System Shock game

Phenomenal game for 1999. Still great today

This game is an oldy but a good, if you like this game my other old school games are all of the deus ex games starting from the 1st and going through them, halflife, and morrowind.
