You know what, I currently do the same, but in.... arcade of all things! Just because I can spawn more planes there in a single match - and I suck at dogfighting.... The RP gain is the same as in Realistic, only the SL gain is reduced. I use 6 planes in a single lineup, crews are crap but who cares....
It depends in this scenario.
Example: If you're using a Tier II Prem to Research a Tier IV, it's gonna be about the same RP gains wise as if you were using a Tier III. If you're using a Tier IV to research a Tier IV, you're gonna have better RP payouts than the Tier II. However, this is also assuming you perform just as well, if not better with the Tier IV. If you're overall performing better with the Tier II, while playing sub-par on the Tier IV, your gains will still be a bit better with the Tier II, and you're also netting a bit more SL.
It's kinda hard to give a straight answer on this due to various factors. The ultimate take away is you get the most value of RP gains if you buy as high as a Premium vehicle as you can reasonably operate well. This is why you often see level 10 war thunder accounts in Tier VII and VIII battles, that even though they start out getting farmed, they'll overall get more gains once they start getting more knowledge and better at operating their vehicle.
.) Using a lower rank vehicle for researching a higher rank vehicle:
.) Rank difference of 1 - penalty is 0
.) Rank difference of 2 - penalty is -60%
So if you research a Rankk IV plane using a Rank II one, you're getting a reduction of minus 60% - yes, even a tech tree plane of Rank III will research faster.
