[FAQ] The state of March of War (as of February 2024)
Greetings.

Given the existence of former players still trickling into our Discord server even after 8 years have passed since the game shut down, I am writing this article meant to complement/supersede the most popular thread, yet long and outdated, "An Open Letter To ISOTX & The March of War Community".

What happened with the original March of War?
March of War is assumed to have been shut down at 00:00 of the 1st of February 2016. Together with the March of War server-side code, March of War: Face-Off server-side code is also assumed to have been erased at the same moment. The servers were shut down because ISOTX, the developers of March of War, went bankrupt. Thus, unable to pay for the infrastructure needed to run the server-side code.

I still have the March of War client. Why can't I play the game?
At 25% loading, the game attempts to load the data associated with your Steam account by trying to communicate with the ISOTX-hosted servers. Since the servers shut down, there is no server to process your request to provide your player data. Thus, the client will be stuck at 25% loading forever. For the same reason, MoW:FO cannot fetch the data required for its proper functioning.

Is my army/user data lost forever?
Debatable. It is assumed that a database that stores user data was in the same server that shut down with the rest of March of War, so it's very likely that said data was erased together with the server-side code when MoW shut down.

There is a remote possibility that a database dump backup was saved by someone when ISOTX disbanded.

Is March of War lost forever?
Not necessarily. There is one known personal project and a publicly-announced project to either revive or to create a spiritual successor to March of War.

Solace Workshop's Avant Guarde project was announced some time in late 2016 or early 2017 to produce a spiritual successor to March of War. They have announced the effort publicly and gathered several former players as members. The (unofficial) March of War Discord server's last update from this particular effort dates from June 2019.

A former ISOTX developer is working on a personal project that is closely related to March of War. This effort is a work-in-progress and no explicit goals for a revival or spiritual successor has been publicly announced. His last update on the MoW Discord server dates from January 2020.

Ryder104 has announced his own effort to properly rig and animate March of War 3D assets. While not explicitly a full revival effort, any deliverable produced by this effort can be used as a stepping stone to ease the burden of a full game revival effort by making 3D assets readily available. More details can be found in the relevant Discord channels on the server linked at the bottom of this article. His last update was on October 2023.

Can't someone just buy the game from the studio and repackage it?
Some ISOTX contact person (as far as I know, some dude named Byron) asked for a 100k USD price for the intellectual property and assets. An early assessment on how much money the community would be able to crowdsource could not get even close to said value. It is also known that the code would require significant work to modernize and fix it, so 100k USD for a game that was never profitable is a bad, bad idea.

Can I help a revival project?
If you have skills that can be useful for game development (composing, 3D modeling, coding, drawing/painting), just join the Discord server linked below and inform the moderation. We will let you know who you can get in contact with.

Are there alternatives for March of War out there?
Not that we know. Some former players found respite playing Call of War. Some in Hearts of Iron. Some in Foxhole. However, none of those can be classified as a turn-based strategy MMO with a WWII/early Cold War era setting.
March of War was quite unique in attempting to introduce these elements together, but ended in a business failure. It is possible that no new similar games have ever been produced because it is technically challenging or because there is no market for it.

Where can I find more information?
The (unofficial) March of War Discord server reunites about 600 former players and ISOTX former employees and keeps them informed as we find out more information on revival projects and MoW-related developments.

https://discordapp.com/invite/ZbaDAa8

When you join the server, remember to read the rules thoroughly.

Disclaimer: the Discord server is not officially associated with any existing revival project nor ISOTX.

Where is the official March of War Discord server?
Discord was still in its infancy when March of War died, so March of War never had an official Discord server. The existing, unofficial one above has never been endorsed by ISOTX (since the company doesn't exist anymore), so we cannot claim to be the official one.

Who the hell are you?
Most people know me as SEHC Darkagma (or darky, or agma), the "Varnicus of the East" (self-proclaimed). I'm a moderator of the aforementioned March of War Discord server and March of War Wikia admin.

I have no affiliation with ISOTX or any particular revival effort whatsoever.

Cheers,
SEHC Darkagma

May at least 1 of these projects succeed so we may be saved from the Battle Royale dark ages.

While the original game still needed more depth and work, and despite shutting down 4 years ago (has it really been that long?) this game still is ranked in my top 15 most played games in my 10 years on steam. (Ranked 13th)

That’s a testament as to its value to me I guess. Because in 4 years not many games I’ve gotten have been played as much (and I’ve got something like 250+ games I think)

I really miss this game, it was so addicting.

Every weekend, I'd get home from school, order a pizza and play this all night while listening to podcasts lol.
