I can't answer much but I can answer number 2 a bit.
o Piercing: Assassins benefits piercing more than any class. Archers/Marksman being second and Warriors third. You could argue some Mages benefit from piercing but generally Assassins benefit from piercing since some if not all of them naturally attacks very fast and need to dish out damage as much as possible.
Aside from piercing, health is the secondary stat you need to have on your Assassin's equipment. You could put some defense on them but typically you would want them to have as much as health possible to survive a bit longer to deal sufficient damage.
Also, in regards to what type of piercing your Assassin's or damage dealer could use. You may likely just use One Piercing item that is Percentage Based. Higher Tier Piercing items offer more flat than there is percentage (if that makes any sense)
o Lifesteal: I gotta say this is the least stat, in my opinion, is both underrated and ineffective because only a handful of heroes can actually benefit from this stat. And those are the heroes that can deal aoe damage around them like Chief or Scar, or any heroes that have abilities that goes off while they are in combat, especially if they're under a CC effect..
Bottomline is Warriors are mostly the ones who can benefit from life steal. They can dish out damage and still be a reliable frontline unit without equipping much defense. Keep an eye out on items that provides both health and defense, doesn't matter how much. Strike a balance between offense and defense on your Warriors and they'll be good. The Dragon Pendant is a good item for warriors that doesn't have a built-in damage aura ability.
Speed: Warriors and Guards are the main candidates for equipping items that has speed but other classes such as Archer/Marksman and Mages do need a bit of speed. The battlefield is not very big but to get in combat quickly after they revive is crucial. You should at least equipped them with just ONE Speed item. If not, that's okay too if you feel comfortable about your heroes not having much speed.
Warriors and Guards is a bit more demanding, you should aim at least 20% speed total on them. The Travel Shoes might be best speed you could get because it is the only item that provides 35% speed and it only takes one space, or Burden in this case.
As for Cooldown, you just oughta put them on heroes you'd think needs it the most.
That's all. Hope this helps.
Final note, as for character specific items, yes that also exists here, you need to figure that out on your own. Stat (specific) boosting items is one thing but the specific items that greatly helps them without going for the expensive higher tier items is something you should keep in mind. You may never know if a Purple or Blue tier item could be just as good like if its an Red tier item.
I believe it will take some time, but it would be very interesting to have in-game information about the attributes in practice, for example, how much damage you will defend with X amount of defense, that It is essential to know whether it is better to invest in life or defense in many heroes.
