I have a european AZERTY keyboard, so being stuck with a wsad layout basically sucks bigtime. I haven't found any obvious ways of changing the key bindings. Does someone know any tips or tricks to re-bind the controls?

No matter how nice a game looks, having a bad controle scheme ruins it all, and not being able to change keys is frankly pitifully bad programming in this day and age.
