3 was an annoying/tedious slog (especially London), but overall it wasn't (quite) as bad as Revelations.
I'm pretty sure that by the time Revelations was released the TR devs basically just hated the franchise, and probably the fans too.
The only time it helps is when the game puts you in situations where you are likely to die and then have to painstakingly backtrack through content you've already covered (which is tedious, frustrating and time consuming).
So it isn't "save scum", it's just less cheap and tedious than the crystal system. Honestly, IMO it's a huge gameplay improvement.
