Secrets of the game's locations

Hello daydreamers!

Everyone who has already played Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow knows very well that the game abounds with a variety of locations, from dark and disturbing to bright and colorful. Why so?

The fact is that all the scenes in the game that we meet represent stages of Griffin's life and the experiences associated with them. The red mansion represents the gravity of the past, namely problems in the marriage between the parents, scandals and domestic violence.

The little homemade wigwam in the boy's room is a symbol of refuge in the realm of hopelessness and unhappiness. This is where he gets away from his father's wrath with his best friend, a teddy bear.

His father's study in the house is the scariest place for Griffin, especially the sinister knight who has become the epitome of his father's cruelty.

That's why our protagonist tries to run away from home, to hide from the ghosts of the past and to forget about his fears.

After the mansion, we find ourselves in a beautiful forest, where we can finally take a break and forget about the dangers for a while.

This place signifies calm after the storm, long-awaited peace and freedom from family problems. In addition, in different parts of the game we may come across statues of women, sad and beautiful at the same time.

This image is none other than Griffin's mother. She is frozen in stone and cannot protect her son from the sinister knight, but, nevertheless, one of the puzzles is hidden in the very first statue, and its solution helps us continue our journey to salvation.

For Griffin, movement is literally life. The streetcar on which he rides with Mira and Birly symbolizes a new home, a new hope, and the pursuit of happiness.

The rails are the path that the protagonist has chosen for himself and moves along it with his chosen woman and child. The symbol of hope here is the lighthouse. It is both distant and close at the same time. The fact that it stands on the very edge of a cliff tells us about the fragility of our dreams.

In the middle of the game we encounter another enemy besides the dark hand and the knight, a giant predatory plant.

This unexpected adversary also has its significance. These are Griffin's inner demons, an extension of his father in him, something he has failed to suppress in himself.

Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow is a story of guilt, regret, redemption, and liberation. This is a story of broken hearts and shattered dreams.

Each location in the game has its own atmosphere and its own symbolism. What places do you remember most? What details did you notice? Please share!

About the game

The story behind the game

Every story begins somewhere...

The tale of these two individuals had its roots in Griffin's early childhood, long before the events of Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow…

Griffin was born into a family where things were complicated. His father was a tough man involved in questionable activities, specifically hunting rare animals, while his mother took care of the household.

Mom and Dad were always busy, so Griffin spent most of his time with nannies and teachers. He was homeschooled and didn't attend a regular school because his parents believed the modern world could harm him. As a result, Griffin struggled to make friends and often felt alone, despite being surrounded by care and attention.

Griffin's only companion was his teddy bear, Birly. To him, Birly was special because the bear listened attentively. Griffin found solace in the bear's black glass eyes, which seemed to show understanding and kindness.

The boy had other toys to play with in his big house. There was a toy train that ran on tracks, a wigwam where he could hide when his father got angry about a business deal gone wrong, and a small knight figure that always stood guard outside the wigwam and never moved.

Griffin's mother couldn't protect him when his father became furious because she relied on him completely, which made her feel powerless. There was also a knight statue in his father's cabinet that always frightened Griffin.

Just like any child, Griffin had his fears. He was scared of his father's anger, of spiders that sometimes appeared on the ceiling of their large house, and of being home alone. He was also curious about the locked vault in his father's cabinet, wondering what secrets it held. Whenever he asked his father about it, he received no answer, which only deepened his fear and made him more uneasy.

Surprisingly, Griffin never feared the dark. He found it intriguing, as if it was calling him to explore its mysteries.

Griffin started spending a lot of time in the darkness, seeking solitude and answers to his innocent and curious questions. One day, his exploration took him too far...

And suddenly, he found himself waking up in a Daydream.

To his amazement, his teddy bear, Birly, came to life and became Griffin's teammate and partner on this exciting and risky journey.

Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow | Puzzles Guide

Hi daydreamers,

Have you finished the game already?
We have prepared a guide to complex puzzles of the game, so if you get stuck on the way don’t miss all the secrets below. Attention: spoilers!

Father's Study

1. Go back into the hallway, and look carefully at the animal paintings.
2. If you can't figure it out.
Then from the corridor with the pictures you must bring the head of a deer and pin it to the wall.

3. Then activate the heads by hanging from them, in the following order:

Log and Spiders

To pass the spiders, push the log toward the fire. It will burn the cobwebs, and a second log will roll down the slide, destroying the spiders.

Spider and Log Trap

1. Take the torch on the left side of the level

2. Walk past the first group of spiders, driving them away with the torch
3. When you reach the trap with the log, turn right and walk a few meters until you see another lone spider. Drive it with the torch into the trap to go further

The Spider and The Trap With The Trap

1. Pull the lever and raise the cage to go to the torch rack
2. Take the torch.
3. Drive the spider with the torch counterclockwise. And when the spider is near the cage, order Birly to activate the flower.
4. After that, drive the spider with the torch again. The spider, startled by the flower, will crawl toward the trap and activate it

5. An alternative way to pass: pick up Birly and throw him into the trap. It will work, the path will be cleared and he remains alive.

Spider in a Cage

1. Push the crate off the cage so the spider can move around.
2. Give the order to Birly to pull the right lever. The first two platforms with the load will go up. Wait until the spider is under the middle platform.
3. Order Birly to pull the left hand lever. The middle platform will lower onto the cage with the spider, and you can crawl under the platform

Mines

1. Slide the crate to overlap the leftmost shaft
2. Slide the platform with the crates to the entrance of the next shaft.
3. Wait until Birly has his back to the platform so you can jump on the crates.

4. Make sure that you stand firmly on the crates. Then give the order to Birly to jump aside, and the platform will move away to the wooden tower
5. Once on the wooden tower, order Birly to pull the yellow lever to extend the trolley, on which you must jump to get to the crate, which will block the next shaft
6. Push the crate.
7. Now that all the mines are blocked, take the torch on the left side of the level, and burn the spider web on the right side of the level
Jump on The Platform
1. Slide the cart so Mira can shoot the target and move the hovering platform
2. Climb over the platform to the left side of the swing and wait until that part of the swing goes down. This is to make the jump higher, thanks to the white light beaming from the ground.
3. Now, sprawled out, push off from the left side of the swing and jump to the right side, which has not yet had time to come down.

Castle

1. Help Mira climb into the suspended arbor so she can shoot the glowing belt of the statue, which activates the platform
2. Through the copper tubes and the platform that moves when Mira's shots are fired, get to the box
3. Slide the box off the ledge so that it falls on one of the four platform keys (1 of 4), which will open the door to go to the next level
4. Scroll the lever with Mira to lower the bridge under which you need to crawl to the next crate
5. Crawl through the pipe to the crate and drop it. This will activate the second key on the door (2 and 4)
6. Order Mira to stand on the third platform (3 of 4), and yourself stand on the fourth (4 of 4)

Fire and Boxes

1. Order Mira to shoot the upper tube with fire so that fire appears from the lower tube
2. Cover the fire from the lower pipe with the cart. Thus, the fire will appear from the pipe located in the next room
3. Order Mira to shoot a fire arrow at the box
4. Throw Birly on the next platform to the valve and tell him to turn it so that the water poured
5. When the water fills the level, dive and swim to the bottom to the right side of the level. Then pull out the giant plug.
6. After the water level has dropped, move the box to the left, toward the tube. After that, put the giant plug back in place so that the crate rises in the water
7. Push the crate under the water to the left until it floats to the surface. Mira can use it to climb to the next platform.

The Light Bulb Puzzle

1. Turn on the bulbs as it follows:

Metal Smelting Riddle

1. Take the gear off the elevator.
2. Push the lever on the right to lower the pot on the left to melt metal
3. Drop the pinion into the pot and wait for it to melt
4. Lift the pot and grab the handle of the second pot and move it to the bottom of the level. Both pots will only move simultaneously if the first pot is up.
5. Lower the first pot to move the second pot to the top of the level without moving the first pot
6. Raise the first pot and move it to the right, moving the second pot to the right as well
7. Lower the first pot and move the second pot closer to the first pot, as shown in the screenshot
8. Lift the first pot again and move it to the top of the level so that it is above the first pot, and lower the first pot to pour the liquid metal from the first pot into the second
9. Cool the part with air and pick up the new elevator part from the second pot

Hello friends,

Quite a bit of players are passionate achievers, so in our game Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow you’ll have a sweet opportunity to obtain all the 14 achievements and add the game into the pride list of perfect games on Steam! All of them convey the story of Griffin, his memories and feelings. You’ll be able to learn the deep story behind the boy’s adventure in the world of daydreams and nightmares.

Let’s go!

Chapter 1

1. On a Journey!

Just go by toy train which you’ll find in Griffin’s room!

2. Mother's Song

Mother's room: find a gramophone record and drop it next to the gramophone.

3. A Kid's Toy

Corridor: pick up a carriage and put it next to a passing toy train.

4. What a Mess!

Father's room: break a vase. A dragonfly will fly out of the shards and into the next vase.
Break all three vases in turn. Then the dragonfly will fly into my father's room.
When we run into father's room we see that the dragonfly flies into the armor.
Armor will start to move, change its pose and extend its arm a bit (before that the arm could not be jumped on and grabbed).
Then jump from the mantelpiece onto the armor's arm.
The armor under the player's weight will fall and collapse. The dragonfly will fly out of the armor and fly to us.

Chapter 2

5. Secret Lair

Broken bridge: jump on a piece of wooden bridge attached to the wall and drop it down. Behind it there is a tunnel through which you can crawl down to Griffin's secret room.
Inside on a broken stalactite there is a jar with a glowing dragonfly. You need to push the jar and free the insect.

6. A Light in the Darkness

Cave of Winds: set fire to the spider egg in the corner of the cave. Then a dragonfly flies away from the remnants.

7. Wind of Change

Mill: drop an airplane from the upper level window of the mill.
A dragonfly flies after the airplane and then flies out the window.

8. Oops!

After Mira joins the player, go back one screen and, using Mira's bow, break the crystal and try to insert it into the trolleybus instead of the crystal amulet.

Once inserted, the crystal starts to beat with electricity, but then explodes and smokes.
After that a dragonfly flies out of the trolleybus and flies away.

9. The Flower

After walking up to the broken trolley, the player can walk to the right and there Mira can shoot the dangling cargo, above the tunnel covered by planks.
After the load falls, the planks break and the descent downward opens.
When the character goes down, the camera turns and shows a hidden tunnel.
There is a magic flower growing in the tunnel. When Griffin approaches the flower, Mira jumps down from above. The character pulls the flower and fireflies fly out from inside and swirl around Mira. Mira rejoices.
Then a dragonfly flies out of the flower and flies away.

10. Vague Memories

Abandoned Castle: find the painting of the wedding and hang it on the wall with a trace of the painting. The picture is originally discolored, but when you hang it up, the picture becomes new.
Plants and luminous flowers grow around the frame. A dragonfly flies out of one flower.

Chapter 4

11. The Swing

Start by swinging the bear on the swings. Bring him up to the swings and push them.
As he swings, a dragonfly flies down from the tree and flies away.

12. The Last Drawing

The elevator behind the big gears: there is a vent hatch behind the elevator that can be ripped off the wall. The hatch falls to the floor.
Behind the hatch the path leads to the locker room. There you can open the box that lies on the floor. Firefly flies out of it.

13. The Pieces

Roof - find the lever and install it in the pipe near the exit to the roof.
Then the steam on the roof will turn off and the player will see beer bottles scattered on the roof.
One of the bottles contains a dragonfly firefly, you need to smash it against the wall.

Chapter 5

14. The Finale

There are chains hanging by the tree. All but one chain at the edge cannot be reached.
When Griffin jumps to this chain, he can jump to the platform next to it.
On this platform there is a moving stone with a crystal. The light from the crystal casts a shadow of strange flying stones.
Initially the shadow shows a lonely suffering man.
But if you move the lantern, at some point the shadows change to a happy family.
The shadows come to life and one of the shadows tosses a small shadow in the air (as if a father is tossing his son).
Then the crystal extinguishes and the shadows disappear.
A dragonfly flies out from the extinguished crystal.

Revealing inspiration behind the game

Hello, dreamers!

In our previous update, we shared the story of how we embarked on the creation of Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow, and expressed how deeply the idea of the game resonated within us. However, like any indie developer, our inspiration for this project stemmed from something special, and today we are thrilled to reveal it!

Before we delve into our inspiration, we kindly request that you add Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow to your wishlist. We are a mere two weeks away from the game's release, which marks the most pivotal moment in our lives. First of all, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. In the game we wanted to address the topics of loneliness and friendship, love and loss and The Little Prince is a perfect example of how these uneasy themes can be told in a very touching way. As a tribute to the Little Prince, Griffin is an image of a little brave boy on his big journey accompanied by his small friend - a teddy bear Birly, which is a reference to the Fox, of course.

Second, the American fantasy TV show Sweet Tooth which was based on the comic book by Jeff Lemire. We liked it a lot, especially the character design, this way, the protagonist’s deer antlers became a prototype of Griffin’s hat.

If we speak about Griffin’s anatomy proportions, the influence of the animated show Star Butterfly, premiered in 2015 is more than evident: the big head, large eyes, thin hands and legs.

Pixar animated movies are our absolute love and eternal source of inspiration, and we wanted to show that through the visual style of the game and some environmental elements.

Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne is deeper than one may think: Christopher Robin is a symbol of a strong adult in the body of a little boy - just like our Griffin is seen by Birly. And Birly, as well as Winnie, represents the naive and weak side of a child’s nature. We can say, the unity of the kid and his toy is referred to the inner conflict within Griffin, the way he tries to help himself.

You already know that Griffin had family problems, evidently, some childhood traumas too. But what else is Griffin escaping? What sorrows does he bear? Is everything as clear as it seems to be?

Daydream: Prologue - Update 1.1.4

Hello dreamers,

We are happy to present you with Update 1.1.4!

What will you find there?

Bug fixes.
Increased response speed and character movement.
Tuned the Bear's AI (now it responds more quickly to commands).
Added new cutscene, pictures, hankies as hints.
Reworked some of the puzzles (the problem with the bag and the bottle in the window, and added a hint on the winding staircase that you must take the leap to jump over the hole.)

Revealing secrets about Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow

IDEA

We started to think about making a new game when we were still finishing the first one. At that time we strongly decided that indie development was our thing, because we understood that we could make ANY game we wanted. But as always, bringing a game to its release - is quite a challenge.

Unfortunately the bar wasn’t the lucky spot for us and really worthy of our time idea just wasn't coming to our minds yet.

But inspiration came a couple of months later, when I watched an animated film called ‘The Little Prince’ by Method Animation. It was based on one of my favorite books written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. At first it seemed to be just a children's story, but as you rewatch a cartoon and re-read the book you can see so much more and reflect on all the deep issues that are written between the lines. At that time I believe we had found our theme, and started building our new game idea around it.

It was decided originally that the game would be based on ‘caracter’s (player’s) imagination’, as it was in the book. So the world would come alive as the character thought or dreamed about it and gaming mechanics would get that idea across. The whole world could be a castle with knights, kings and dragons.

That was a time when the first concept arts were created and having them really helped us to move forward to work on the plot.

PLOT

As at that time our team only consisted of me and the 3D artist, it was quite a challenge for us to come up with a satisfying plot for the game. Another challenge is that a script for a book and the script for a game are two very different things. After wasting too much time trying our best we understood that we needed someone to finish the writing that we began. Luckily we found a writer on Youtube who really helped us refine our ideas and complete the story.

BUT /surprize, surprize/ we were overwhelmed with our own ambition and finally accepted that it would take us years to implement all of these mechanics. At this point we decided to keep only the core message of the game and focus on that.

CHARACTERS

No one can tell for sure what, how and how many times had been changed. At some point secondary characters were morphs! Of course they didn’t make it to the final version of the game.

The plot went through evolution for sure, but the main character remained the same boy we started this adventure with. At the same time the world he was placed in became darker and more dangerous.

We wanted our main character to stand out among others so we added various details to his appearance. Toy mate finally became a teddy bear and the mysterious dark arm started to chase our characters.

SMALL STEPS

We started to participate in various indie competitions while we were still working on the game. You can’t imagine how happy we were when we won “the best game on UE4”. After that we applied for the UE Mega Grant. Can you imagine our emotions back then? How pleasing it was to get this letter from Epic Games =)

Later Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow received the BEST UNREAL ENGINE GAME and the sponsored XSOLLA’S CHOICE awards at Indie Cup W’21. At this point we found our publisher Ravenage Games and we are happy that the world can finally enjoy a special journey that Daydream: Forgotten Sorrow is.

We hope our not so easy path will be interesting and inspiring to gamers and other developers.

About the game
