Tips for newcomers
What little tips can you share, that don't give away game elements themselves (so "go to X for Y plant" doesn't count)? What advice do you have to someone new to the game? Please don't post spoilers, even mild ones.

I'll start.

- If you're out of control, running down a hill, try slowing yourself down by turning to one side or the other until you're running up another slope. On a long slope, you can even turn 180 degrees back up the slope you're on. Or, just hold down the S key to slow you quickly to a stop.

- Remember that the Bunsen burners[en.wikipedia.org] you sometimes see in laboratories act as lights and save the game.

- Don't forget that you sometimes need to crouch to pick things up

Yours?

- plant specimen storage is shared across all stations

- you can't carry more than one of any _specific type_ of item at a time, as in you can't carry two sunflowers or three basic medicine.

- any medicine left in the synthesis tray will be destroyed if you make a second one without retrieving it.

Great idea for a thread! I'm pinning this.

Houses and tents are safe zones from the beast.

-Do not misunderestimate your map, and the need to use it. Wandering aimlessly is just asking to be eaten

-Never go on long trecks without basic medicine at the least. If you plan to go hunting for rare things, prep, then double prep. You'll be glad you did.

- There's actually no time limit in the game. As long as you keep sleeping, drinking water and so on, the plague will not kill you. You could, if you want, just spend time mapping the island at your leisure before even looking for the cure.

- If you get fever symptoms, and there's a cabin nearby with a bed, head there and sleep rather than use up your valuable medicine.

- If the specimen trays are full, drop excess plants on the floor of the laboratory. They won't follow you around the map like the specimen trays, but they'll still be there when you come back.

- There is a useful map function, after you triangulate your location with two known landmarks you can add a third unknown landmark and the map will draw a line from your location towards that spot. Do this twice from two different spots and the unknown landmarks gets plotted onto your map. This lets you add distant statues and tents for use in triangulating

- Unlike other First Person games, you WILL slip down slopes. You'll fall and injure yourself if you fall too far or fast, which will also cause you to drop any items you may have been carrying in your hands. (Items in your inventory will remain with you until you use them.) As a point of note, you will drop any weapons or plants in your hands if you swim in deep water, so be careful of that as well.

- Speaking of water, drink from every fresh water source you come by, which includes decanters, ponds, inland lakes and swamps. This will keep you from dehydrating, as well as reserve/ refill the water in your canteen.

- Remember to check your watch and compass often. You don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere when the sun goes down.

- If you find yourself stuck outside in the dark, try picking up some dry branches from the ground. They make good torches for you to find your way through the night, but they only last a few minutes.

- Effective cartography can sometimes mean the difference between finding your way to the nearest camp and perishing out in the wilderness. That said, many parts of the island are very difficult, if not nearly impossible, to map because landmarks won't be visible through the many trees usually blocking your view.

- If you see something on the ground, try picking it up. You never know what useful medicines or weapons you'll wind up with.

- When the creature does appear, just remember: Hide, Run, Fire, Attack. HRFA.

HIDE: When you first detect its approach, the first thing you should always do is find a place to hide, whether it's in tall grass, or behind a large object. You can even hide underneath (inside?) large bushes and shrubs, if they're around. They work quite well. Once your there and you're sure you haven't been spotted, STAY STILL. The creature senses noise as well as by smell and sight. If you feel the creature is getting too close, throw a rock somewhere far away from you, but close enough for the creature to hear. It will distract the creature and likely lead it in a direction away from your hiding spot.

RUN: If the creature spots you, run away! As you run, try to go over hills and ridges, or take a winding path so that you disappear from the creature's line of sight. When you're sure it can't see you anymore, find another place to hide. One thing that helps greatly is that the creature seems to have trouble crossing most bodies of water. If you can, cross some shallows and find a place to hide while the creature is navigating the river or lake you just crossed.

FIRE: If running to a new area produces no viable hiding spots, which should almost never happen, search the ground for dried branches. When you pick them up, you'll light them on fire which, in my experience, works very well in warding off the creature. It may circle you a few times before it runs away, but keeping the branch pointed at the creature has usually resulted in it running away for me.

ATTACK: If absolutely everything you've tried has failed and you're in a corner, attack the creature to drive it off. When you attack, don't take on the creature in a straight up fist fight. Instead, throw things at it from a distance, like rocks, sticks and anything else you may have around you to throw. If hiding has failed for me, I run immediately towards the nearest shore. Shores are an excellent haven for rocks, which you can use against the creature once it's cornered you.

HRFA sounds silly, but using this principle has allowed me to survive all of my encounters with the creature so far except for one, which was my own fault because I was running up a hill that was too steep for my character.

- In some cases, the creature will get stuck and wander the same area in a circular pattern over and over. This means its AI is stuck and it will do this forever, unless you can manage to sneak away and run for it when you're sure it can't hear or see you from where it's patrolling. Once you get far enough away, the encounter will end. If you get spotted during your retreat, refer to HRFA.

Hopefully that's helpful.

Don't bother mixing ingredients randomly, the only combinations I've found in 20+ tested in all pairs are the ones you find out about by researching the ingredients themselves.

- If multiple animals are fleeing around you, the beast is nearby.

- Your audible heartbeat will start when the beast is nearby. If it speeds up, the beast has detected you.

- If you are on low terrain and the beast has a vantage point, you are more likely to be spotted. Try to see the beast before it sees you.

- If you are physically weakened in some way, you are more likely to be attacked.

- Showing your back to the beast when it is pursuing you is a bad idea.

- I realized that the fire is the best way to scare the creature, throwing or swinging in front of her.

- if you believe you will find the creature, go hiding in the bushes. If your heart start beating, stay where you are, the creature will pass by and then go away.

- Always focus on your way from outpost to outpost.

(sorry for the bad english)

Thanks for the tips. I just started the game and haven't seen the beast yet, and that's making me tense. I bet the first time I see it I'm going to be pooping my pants because I feel so weak in this game. Loving it so far though!

A safe way to go down steep slopes, is turning around and moving slowly backwards untill you start to build up speed. Then use W to keep the speed at a low walking pace.

Even though many people say it doesn't work. You can use multiple emphasis drugs to get higher than normal stats. At least in my game.
When sliding down a large hill, aim for trees. You will either bounce off of them or stop completely. Both will slow your descent greatly.

Incidentally, it should be noted that some advice in this thread doesn't necessarily apply to real life.

Avoid being lost while it's dark at all costs. It's not fun and can set you back badly. Have a specific target area in mind when you leave camp. For example, leave from my tent and head for camp X to the northwest. If you do not have a specific point that you can navigate to (exploring grey areas) always leave in the AM so you have plenty of time to stumble on a tent or camp. I've never been lost at night thanks to this plan.

Don't stress too much about water. Your canteen holds 5 shots and there are plenty of freshwater pools and jugs to refill along the way.

When you are at a camp with a lab, look around! If there are a lot of one type of plant in the immediate area, you can usually turn it into a basic medicine. Always make a batch to go before you leave. I've never run into a tent that had a lab so you won't be able to make medicine on the fly. (although you can sleep in tents of course)

Learn how to triangulate EARLY. I thought I was doing it right for like 2 hours until I came to my senses. Review your in-game notes, check advise on these boards, watch youtube videos, etc. Whatever gets you doing it right.

Don't bother fighting the creature. You won't kill it and you'll probably die trying. If you are really paranoid about him, stick to the coasts for a while. If he pops up in the forest, he'll follow you to the coast (he'll follow you pretty much anywhere), but he rarely attacks you there to begin with.

Follow your maps at first. They'll provide you with landmarks to triangulate and get you used to the game's mechanics. They'll give you a basic point A to point B to point C routine until you get the first ingredient for the cure. Then you have to explore on your own to get more maps. Mild spoiler/hint alert- there are a lot of important ingredients to be found in the north west of the island if want some direction after getting half of agent y.
