The game is showing its age, the graphics are just totally outdated.

The gameplay is still excellent, big skeletons with swords and shields that take you out in caves behind doors or come into the first house at the beginning and loot everything and walk so slowly that you have to clear everything away.

It's better to play with some mods.

If you haven't noticed it by now, RPG gamers are the biggest pseuds on the planet. I love Skyrim. I am a total normie Skybaby. When I was a teenager, I was really intimidated by all these online forum guys with a lot of opinionated knowledge about all these 'super complex old school games' who derided my new favorite game for being "dumbed down."

Since then I went to college, completed my CS degree, got a software dev job, got another software dev job, and now lead my own dev team. And now I also know the truth. RPG grognards are mall IT guys. I know for a fact they don't know ♥♥♥♥ about programming or project management so I doubt they know ♥♥♥♥ about anything else pertaining to game design. These are sad sacks that underachieved in life and are desperate for games that provide them the illusion of expertise. The value complexity not for the gameplay depth it might provide (though that's the lie they tell themselves), but because it satisfies their conception of themselves as a misunderstood intellectual. As such, they prefer the appearance of complexity over the genuine thing.

To give you example. Attributes in Morrowind are a mathematically redundant mechanic. Any attribute stat modifier could be replicated with a combination of skill modifiers. Removing them from Skyrim did not actually reduce the complexity of the game. This doesn't make them pointless. You can argue attributes provide some aesthetic value, implying a distinction between base character traits and learned skills. But Morrowboomers don't take thing angle. Instead they insist that this made the game dumber. While it probably did help the game's accessibility, like I said it doesn't actually reduce the complexity because it was only ever illusory complexity in the first place. They don't care because it was always about their ego not the mechanics themselves.

Oh, and the journal is literally just a game guide. There's one single riddle in the entire game.
