As of June 2024, if you're using Steam on Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon Edition "Virginia", maybe another Ubuntu based OS, and encounter a black screen after the initial start screens (tools and Crytek screens); then make sure to download "Wine" in the software manager app for your distro. I'm new to LInux and don't know about anything other than what I know now from trial and error. Just for safe measure, make sure you go to the "properties" setting, enable "force using compatibility" and select "Proton Experimental".

While Valve has implemented a Linux "buffer" of sorts, their Proton layer doesn't work with everything, so download every thing between Wine and Proton, and the 3.0 Sniper file that Steam should automatically download. Not every game launch will process Vulkan shaders, so keep that in mind as well because background errors do tend to happen.

No need to download sketchy online files, if you know how to get packages in the Terminal, then by all means. If not, then follow what I've stated and you're easy sailing.
