Problems with Proton and non steam launchers

Proton doesn't seem to work well for me. All games with their own launcher (e. g, Trackmania with ubisoft connect) and some other games also won't launch. I have tried using proton experimental and GE-Proton, to no avail. I have tried troubleshooting the problems myself, but I also don't get any logs with the PROTON_LOG=1 %command% when starting any games. I am running Ubuntu 23.1 with an ryzen 5 5600g and a rx 5700xt. Thanks for any help in advance.
Edit: After switchint to Kubuntu, a few more games work, including KSP2 which needs it's own launcher, but some games with good protondb ratings still dont work.

you being on Ubuntu plus you not getting proton logs where expected makes me suspicious you're using the Snaps version of steam (sandboxed, so log goes to different path... and some weird quirks that don't always match common issues in the apt package)

if that's the case you should try the native apt package from ubuntu's repos

sudo apt install steam
