massgate.org is the way, or GOG. Game runs great off the GOG version, playing it now.

its because massgate or whoever the publisher was, went to ubisoft launcher, or that other steam competitor that completely sucks.

tldr it was a license issue or something dumb from what i remember.

literally just played through the whole story again 2 hours ago. windows 10 2060 super I7 works FINE
