I ended up downloading the game from https://www.massgate.org/downloads.php

they have put it up for free, and they give you a cd key as well.
I followed most of the instructions to get it up to date, I had to add extra maps + i had to get the fix for 14+ core processors crashing on startup - had to bypass starting the game using command prompt for the first time, afterwards it works flawless... not many players online - but that's the only way that worked for me - anything else i tried didn't work.
