Pheromone is not necessarily a mistake, at worst it's a beginner's trap, it's something to take if you're confident enough that you can handle the increased enemy spawns/stats. If you can't, you lose, simple as. But the increased volume of enemies does benefit you if you survive, because that's more exp and gold, therefore you get new items/upgrades or finish upgrading existing ones much sooner than you would without pheromones.

The real trap is that one item, was it the bounty board item? One that doubles boss spawns. That ♥♥♥♥ WILL cost you the game every time due to the bosses just zergrushing your town.

I liked this game enough to get all the achievements and put nearly 30 hours into it? Still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ HATED the mechanic of bosses ignoring the player and instantly killing you if they reach the left side. I lost way too many runs to the minute 19 boss just being too fast and tanky for me to stop. >:o

It's viable unless you're doing the castle, and the extra items are worth the double boss spawn.
