How to host your own server! (Port forwarding)
Every server in the server browser is full? Not enough servers with your favorite maps?
No problem! Rise of the Triad has built-in methods of hosting your own servers!

Note: Hosting Rott servers may require some manual configuration in your router setting and/ or Windows firewall settings. It's not complicated, but you will need some basic knowledge about how to access your router setup and Windows/ third party firewall. If you don't feel confident about that, ask a fellow Rott player for assistance or ask him/ her to host instead.

Hosting Ingame

The easiest way is to simply use the ingame hosting functionality. Go to the Multiplayer menu, select "Host game", select a game mode and which maps you want in the rotation.

(Note: The following text is an excerpt from the official manual with slight additions (notably port 27015). You can find the manual by hitting 'play' on Steam and selecting 'Ludicrous game manual'. It also has a section for Windows 8 users. )

In order to host a server, you must have port 7777 as well as TCP 27015 open
A) on your router and
B) your firewall must be able to accept incoming connections.
Port 27015 is a Steam specific port. You will find related info in this Valve support article: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711

Rise of the Triad™ features several methods of UPNP discovery. If players have difficulty joining your server, turning the "Use Async. UPNP" launcher option to off may provide better results.

Unfortunately, we cannot guide you through setting up your modem/ router to forward the game specific ports, as the procedures vary vastly between manufacturers. Please refer to your device's manual and look for 'port forwarding' or 'server hosting' sections. An internet search, including the device name, may be very helpful as well.

FIREWALL SETTINGS

WINDOWS XP USERS:

1) Click on Start, and navigate to Control Panel.
2) Ensure you're in Classic mode (If you are not, click on "Switch to classic
view" on the left taskpane").
3) Double click on "Windows Firewall".
4) Click on the "Exceptions" Tab and then the "Add Port" button.
5) For "Name", you may call it whatever you wish, but "Rise of the Triad™
Multiplayer" may help you find it for future modification. For "Port
Number", enter "7777". Check the TCP and UDP circle and click Ok.
6) Do the same for port 27015, and select TCP plus UDP.

WINDOWS 7 USERS:

1) Click the Start Button, and in the search box, type “firewall”, click on
Windows Firewall and select advanced settings.
2) Select Inbound rules and then new rule.
3) Select the port and ensure it is set to TCP/UDP with number 7777.
4) Do the same for port 27015 TCP/UDP.

Hosting with the dedicated server tool

Rise of the Triad also comes with a dedicated server tool, which is quite handy if you just wanna provide a server for your fellow Rott players while not playing yourself. The dedicated server is also much more lightweight regarding the resources it consumes on your PC, so you can keep it running while doing something entirely else.

Note: The dedicated server tool requires the game specific ports to be open/ forwarded. Please refer to the guide above, the same procedures apply!

You can find the so-called "Ludicrous Dedicated Server" either by launching the game from Steam and selecting the third launch option, or you can manually launch it from the game's directory. I would highly advise the second option.
Navigate to your Steam folder, most likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam and then navigate to the 'common\Rise of the Triad' subfolder.
In my case, it's E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Rise of the Triad.

Find the 'LDKDedicatedServer.exe' and launch it!
The window should look something like this: http://imgur.com/S2diJlo

The necessary steps are straight-forward:
1.) Select a name for your server in the upper right field
2.) In the field below, select a game mode (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, CTF)
3.) Select a variety of maps from the list on the left side. You can remove a selected map by using the button on the bottom right.
4.) In the 'server launch options', select the number of max players (not all maps are suitable for 16 players), a round time limit and the number of frags necessary to win a round
5.) I recommend to let the port field (lower right corner) unaltered at 7777. If you - for some reason - want the server to be operating on a different port, you have to make sure that said port is open/ forwarded like described above.

If you have any questions regarding server hosting, please post them below, or hop into the Rise of the Triad chatroom (top right corner of the Community Hub) and ask for assistance. We will try to be around as much as possible and help with any questions.
Please understand that we may not be able to assists with router/ modem specific problems

Thanks for this, going to add that port for US West.

I'd also like to note as well as opening said port for Steam, and port 7777 for ROTT, I also opened port 8777 and 9777

Hi,

JESUS-CLAN server admin here.
After the update my server is not shown in the serverlist anymore.
Port 7777 UDP and 27015 TCP are opened.
Server has been started as dedicated Deathmatch.

My server is now getting clients. I forwarded 7777 and 7778 UDP, 27015 and 27036 both TCP and UDP, and 59966 UDP. I also had my Steam client running at the time. Now that it is working I can narrow down how much of this I actually need to keep it working.

@Rottman3D i have opened all ports and redownloaded the whole game.

JESUS-CLAN server is up and running!!

Feel free to join up and leave a message :-)

Excellent. Game on!

Rottman, let me know when you figured out which ports are sufficient.
I think 7777 and 27015 both TCP/UDP should be good to go, and from what people in chat tell me, they are running fine on that setup.
How did you figure out to include 27036 and 59966?

I did a "netstat -anb" in a command prompt and looked at all ports that ROTT.exe or STEAM.exe were listening on. Steam does not appear to be needed so the steam ports can likely be closed. UDP 7777, 7778, and 27015 are all that the ROTT process is using.

B.t.w. it seems that the dedicated server has a serious memory leak.... after one day uptime it consumes about 1,6 GB of RAM at the time of the server start it was only about 600Mb.

Can anybody confirm this?
BlueRed 4 Oct, 2014 @ 5:28am
Now its 1,8 GB increasing constantly
BlueRed 4 Oct, 2014 @ 12:37pm
Now its 2,8 GB ...lets wait for the crash ....
Any response from the devs?

Forwarded it to the programmers!
Until there is a fix, you'll have to work-around by restarting the server every once in a while!

Thank you !
B.t.w. i also created a thread in the support forum.
