HL1's Interloper? Better than the Room. The first act of Daikatana? Better than the Room. Halo 1's Library? Yep, you guessed it: better than the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Room. :D
Another great one from Civvie though and I appreciate him gently calling out 3D Realms / Slipgate / whatever for not being keen on finishing the games they release in early access.
He mainly talks about FPS games from the 90s or have an arena-style approach, like Dusk and AMID EVIL.
- Spend 5 minutes there.
- Find the usual "Duke Nukem Forever is actually good" take.
- Cry.
Some people just have bad taste or are still very much into one dimensional blonde muscle man with the jokes to the point where even something terrible like DNF becomes excusable since Duke's in it. The Duke community in general has this weird problem where the "I know it sucks but it's Duke" kicks in and then a dude starts shouting at you and telling you to ♥♥♥♥ off because you dared to question George Broussard's ingenuity. These are also the people who buy every single one of 3D Realms' "released in early access and never to be finished" FPS titles cause you know, the logo.
Thing is, George Broussard can't be held to blame for the state of DNF when it came out. It was Gearbox that cobbled together the entangled mess that 3D Realms had made and then released it to the public. From my understanding, they were just handed all of the files they had in bulk, with nothing to connect any of it, so Gearbox simply put them together in a way that they thought made sense, and then put in whatever voice lines had also been sent over. The infamous, "Looks like you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥" line that absolutely nobody in the world found funny wasn't recorded to be used for that scene, it was probably meant to be used when killing the queen or something similar, but Randy the grease monster and his team of morons thought it would be funnier for Duke to mock the two girls he was devoted to saving instead.
The human filth named Randy Pitchford and his talentless team at Gearbox are 100% to blame for the state of Duke Nukem Forever, just like they're 100% to blame for the state of Aliens: Colonial Marines, and I don't understand why people continue to support them when they've proven that Borderlands was a one trick pony, and every other release they've done since then has been so bad that they've repeatedly been given 'worst game of the year awards' (remember Battleborn? No? Good, nobody else does either!), along with Randy himself being taken to court for being a paedophile, which doesn't surprise me in the least. He's publicly lied when he claimed Borderlands 3 would have 'no microtransactions' right before it was announced it would, he claims A:CM is a 7.5/10 game when the entire world knows it's trash, he claimed Battleborn would never go free-to-play, about 2 months before it went free-to-play... for two months and then it was shut down for being such a failure, and he's openly insulted Valve before, when the entire reason his company exists in the first place was because they made expansions for Half-Life! I have no idea how he still has a job or why people continue to support his company despite all he's done.
Also yes, this absolutely needs to happen at some point, as well as a Pro Gunman Chronicles.
Nope. The game is better than Halo CE. The game is more fun than many modern AAA games. And I absolutely despise that people praised the new Doom games for executions being mandatory while Duke was insulted for making executions a suggestion. The game has its flaws but it's a game that has a less absurd inventory system than ROTT's method of carrying two useless pistols, a nice smg, and some limited use weapon. You can carry whatever 4 weapons you want in DNF unlike ROTT. It's not bad taste to like DNF. It's only insane to be in the extremist camp of "Yeah it's the best thing ever" or the extremist camp of "Yeah it's the worst thing ever.". Don't like it? Fine. I'm a Doom fan but I don't like the two new Doom games either. Just don't act like you're superior in your tastes.
Well originally you were limited to only carrying two guns at a time in DNF, also it was more how bad the humour was and how out-dated the character models appeared that gave it such a slamming. As an fps, it's competent, though uninspired, as a duke game though, it's the worst of the franchise.
As for modern Doom, i'm not much of a fan either, it doesn't feel like 'Doom'. OG Doom had enemies that were an obstruction, you killed them 'cos the moment to moment gunplay was fun and removing enemies made moving forward easier. Modern Doom though are arena shooters, they lock you in a room and tell you you can't leave until everything is dead, and that kills some of the fun of the shooting, because it's not that you want to do it, it's that you're *forced* to do it.
This is something the indie boomer shooters nowadays seem to understand, there's hardly ever a point in games like Dusk or Amid Evil where you're forced to empty a room of it's occupants before you can progress, they simply have enemies large enough that they hinder, but not prevent, progression of the level, which makes shooting them optional, but the shooting is so much fun that you indulge in it by choice.
- I don't think that the game is better than Halo 1 but anyway why compare a Duke game to Halo? Halo is absolutely not the league where DNF should have proven its worth, Duke Nukem 3D is the game that should have been topped or at least matched in quality.
- Doom's glory kills are fast and they serve the gameplay. DNF's executions are clunky, slow, they look like ♥♥♥♥ and they don't give you anything that 5 seconds of staying in cover doesn't give you. So Doom's glory kills work while DNF's execution system (if you can even call it a system) is badly designed diarrhea.
- Why the ROTT comparison? Yeah ROTT's weapon system was pretty crap 30 years ago and barely anyone has played that game, comparing it to DNF is just as irrelevant as this here ROTT remake. The comparison also doesn't excuse DNF's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ weapon limit that just doesn't serve the arsenal and the level design at all. Lots of times you can't use the more exotic weaponry because you need the space for other stuff.
- I don't think that DNF is the worst thing ever (post-DNF 3D Realms made quite a few games that are worse than DNF, ROTT '13 and Bombshell absolutely suck more), it's just a really awful sequel to one of the best games ever made (Duke 3D). Meanwhile Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are excellent sequels to one of the best games ever made (Doom).
- Yes if you fail to appreciate any of the new Doom games while you highly appreciate DNF then you absolutely positively have terrible taste and you should hide in the shadows until that gets cured.
For context I'd like to add that I've actually played the ♥♥♥♥ out of DNF, I bought that game on launch day and unlocked more than 90% of its achievements, have more than 80 hours in it. It's a fascinating trainwreck that I have fairly deep knowledge of so I'm certainly not saying its crap after playing it for 3 hours or something like that. Any basis for criticism is actually completing a game and I encourage playing through and analyzing DNF because there is a lot of insanity in there.
