Sniper Elite Resistance: A Step Backward for the Series

I’ve been a dedicated fan of the Sniper Elite series since the very beginning, and to me, the franchise peaked with the third and fourth installments. While the fifth game was acceptable, it was clear that developer Rebellion's practices to monetize their games were in full swing. Because of this, even when a new game in the series is decent, I find it difficult to give it a good rating. It seems the developers don't understand that these scummy monetization practices will eventually drive away the most loyal fans, leaving them with no one.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Frankly, very little has changed in Sniper Elite Resistance from the fifth game, and what has changed often feels like a step backward. The large, open-world maps that have defined the series since Sniper Elite 4 make a return, which is a good thing in theory. However, the maps feel far too large and empty for the number of enemies present. It seems like enemy patrols roam without any cohesion, making them feel like a scattered, disorganized mess rather than a tactical military unit. This lack of enemy density means you spend more time running between mundane objectives than you do engaging in tactical combat. The days of setting intricate traps and outmaneuvering patrols are gone because there simply aren't enough enemies to make it worthwhile. You can also easily aggro the entire map and pick off enemies as they poorly attempt to find you. They'll just keep coming until only the enemies who are rooted in place are left. It should feel like a shooting gallery, but it even fails to hit that mark because it's just watching enemies run around the map and take cover in the same five spots.

I've played on Authentic difficulty since Sniper Elite 3 and spent countless hours mastering the language of muzzle velocity, windage, and gravity. Unfortunately, it feels like the series has put less and less emphasis on this mode with each new installment. Sniper Elite Resistance takes this a step further; I've been able to complete entire maps using just a Welrod and a Thompson. For the most part, the maps are completely devoid of wind, even on Authentic, making it feel more like a basic hitscan shooter than a true sniper simulation.

Another major issue is the sheer abundance of ammo and tools scattered across the map. You can find enough ammunition to take on a small army, let alone the hundred or so enemies on a given map. Generators, which used to be a rare and valuable way to mask your shots, are now plentiful. On the third map alone, I found six generators all within close proximity. This laziness in item placement shows a lack of thoughtful design. Ammo carts appear in nonsensical locations, like by a lone shrub hundreds of feet from any enemy patrol. The entire experience feels empty, lacking challenge, and poorly designed.

Story and Setting

Like other Sniper Elite games, the story is largely a backdrop for the action, but I found myself so annoyed with the main character, Harry, that I turned off all in-game voices and relied solely on subtitles. While I tried switching to Karl, I was disappointed to find he still spouts his same tired, overly-obvious lines, like "Tall grass, good for hiding" and "SMG, in case things get hectic." These lines feel like they were written for infants and serve as nothing but an annoying distraction. Harry, however, is on another level, sounding like a bargain-bin Jason Statham. With his punchable face and horrible voice, I ended up skipping every cutscene and ignoring the story entirely.

Graphics and Sound

Visually, Sniper Elite Resistance looks like a game from 2010. There are times when it looks worse than games like Halo: Reach, especially the jagged, low-detail mountains in the background. It's clear that Rebellion is still using the same engine it's been beating to death since Aliens vs. Predator. Anti-aliasing still doesn't work, and like the previous games, I had to install a third-party tool like ReShade to get any modern visual effects. The game has severe screen tearing even with G-Sync enabled on high-end hardware. Many of the assets, including guns, enemy models, and animations, appear to be copy-pasted directly from Sniper Elite 4 and 5. The sound is acceptable, but I can't speak to the music, as I turned that off along with the voice acting.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

The fundamental sniping and stealth mechanics are still present, though watered down

It still feels like a Sniper Elite game

Cons:

Game is far too easy, even on the hardest difficulty

Mind-numbing story and terrible voice acting

Outdated graphics and technical issues

Repetitive and uninspired mission design

Maps feel empty due to low enemy count

The inclusion of Denuvo anti-tamper, which causes occasional performance hitches

Scummy monetization practices for legacy content

Conclusion

Sniper Elite Resistance is a disappointing entry in a series that I once loved. It feels like a tired and uninspired sequel, relying on the same old formula without adding anything new or interesting. The game's core mechanics, which have been a highlight of the series, are undermined by lazy design choices and a lack of polish. This is all compounded by Rebellion's business practices. It’s hard to justify their approach when they are charging $4-5 for two guns—the Mosin and the 1911—that have been staples in every previous Sniper Elite game. These aren’t even included in the season pass, forcing players to pay extra on top of their full-priced game and season pass purchase. This makes the company feel more like an asset flip operation than a true developer. I would only recommend this to the most die-hard fans of the series, and even then, I'd suggest waiting for a significant sale.

ABSOLUTE GARBAGE.

SE used to be my favourite game of all times but since it is plagued by blatant cheaters using offmap hacks and auto aim bots, the game is no longer enjoyable. Reporting this cheaters makes no difference at all, they won't get banned. Such a shame because this game has a lot of potential.
