xBox Controller only works in the menu

I can't control the ♥♥♥♥ (yeah male chicken - grow up steam) after the first cutscene.
But I can access the menu with start and switch/select new game etc.

How so?

Had the same issue with another gamepad, but then realized that I had to accesss control options from main menu, not from inside game to select gamepad for player 1
