The premise is simple: survive. You play as Amanda Ripley, daughter of the Ripley, whose decision to explore a creepy space station feels like an extreme case of “following in mom’s footsteps.”

Now, about that alien. This is not your average video game enemy who just follows a script. Oh no, this Xenomorph has a PhD in Psychology and has read every survival guide you’ve ever skimmed. It lurks, it learns, and it’s apparently mastered the fine art of trolling. You hide in a locker? It checks the locker. You throw a noisemaker? It stops, thinks about it, and then proceeds to investigate directly where you’re standing. It’s like it knows. And it’s terrifying.

But fear not, you’ve got tools! Useless tools. Sure, you get a motion tracker, but all it really does is beep loudly enough to alert the alien. And flamethrowers? Great in theory, but it’s like trying to scare off a lion with a hairdryer. The real hero here is the locker. You will spend hours in that thing.

Every corridor is dimly lit, filled with steam vents, and makes random noises that seem specifically designed to trigger your fight-or-flight response. The whole place just screams, “Maintenance overdue,” and the humans on board are somehow worse company than the alien. They’re either trying to shoot you or giving you that “I’ve been stuck in space for too long and I might snap” vibe.

The game's visuals capture the Alien film's aesthetic in stunning detail, giving you that perfect 1970s vision of the future. The CRT monitors, clunky machinery, and chunky, analog-style tech on the Sevastopol Station feel nostalgic, yet entirely immersive. The game’s art direction really nails the "lived-in" future feel, where everything looks worn down, grimy, and used—a stark contrast to the sleek, high-tech environments often seen in other sci-fi games.

The game’s sound design is a perfect partner to its visuals, enhancing the vibe. The ambient noise of the station, the hum of machinery, and the distant sounds of the Xenomorph in the vents all combine to create a sensory experience that constantly keeps you on edge.

While this game does have a handful of flaws that hold it back from perfection, I still hold it as a 9/10 and I would say one of the best games ever made.

Graphics = still gorgeous even in 2024. Atmosphere = incredible. Sound design = utterly superb. The AI (for the alien hunting you) = somehow still unmatched even after ten years. Level design = fantastic. Gameplay = tense, but extremely satisfying.

There's also a LOT of attention to detail in making the station feel like a lived-in community, and a lot of effort went into other immersive details such as the player animations, environmental physics and ambient sounds. I can feel the respect and love for the Alien IP just oozing out of every facet of this game.

All of this makes for some truly spine-chilling confrontations, and the AI being so sophisticated means it feels so much more rewarding when you manage to prevail against it and survive against the odds.

9/10, would recommend to anyone -- get terrified, be scared! Persevere anyway. The only way out is through. I believe in you!

The game and especially the AI still hold up all these years later and still doesn't miss a beat in jumpscaring you ♥♥♥♥-less. It's actually astounding how better this game is than most modern games coming out today. A stark commentary on our current world-wide competency crisis, but also why passion for what you make as an artist is so important, and why an insatiable spiritual thirst for beauty is needed to create something good. There is a need there to quench your appetite by devoting yourself to seeing that not only does the final product achieve your vision, but that it is sincere enough that it respects the audience's time and expectations. That, and a total autistic dedication to getting every little minute detail just right. In that way, this is a very British love letter to a very British film at a time when the creative zeitgeist was at its apex for humanity. And this game shows reverence for that by being made by people who grew up watching that film and actually cared about getting it right. That's all there is to it: having enough care to show respect to what came before you, building upon that foundation and not trying to tear everything down. In that way, Alien Isolation is one of the best movie games ever made, and certainly one of the best horror games ever made too. It's a win-win for Creative Assembly, for movie fans, and for gamers everywhere.

Also, if you want to make the game even scarier by having the Alien be even more untethered and unpredictable than normal, then try out this mod: search ModDB for "Unpredictable Alien Mod." Only do this after your first playthrough though.

I have gifted this game to friends and family who would of otherwise been too scared to play it, then guilt trip them into playing it because "i bought you a 40 dollar game" (I lied to them, it was on sale) then watch as they struggle in horror.

Rare is a game that I play it again and again once I finish it. This is the one! Loved it 10 years ago when it came out, love it still. Can't wait for a sequel!

After 10 years of silence, we are finally getting a sequel to this amazing game.
