Why was the remaster not free for original owners?
The visual improvements are fairly mild, and PTDE was plagued with horrible issues from the beginning, almost a scam PC port. It's laughable they'd double dip on people who supported the game/company from the beginning through a bad PC port.

This came out nearly a decade ago, it came with a hard copy, art book, postcards, a DVD on the making of the game. Only people that own the hard copy and codes can play this version of the game, or idiots who buy keys worth 300+ euro and no hard copy.

I literally never had a hard copy so I'm 99.9% sure you're mistaken my guy. Also, what does that have to do with my post?
Thanks god they didn't add ♥♥♥♥ to my steam account
I never thought the remaster should be free. It should have been better, but that's another topic.

It's pretty common practice for remasters to be free to OG buyers unless it's a straight-up remake. I think FS should have made this free considering how broken and awful the original port was.

It's really not that common, especially outside the indie scene. And I don't think those should be free either.

Bioshock 1

Bioshock 2

Mafia 2

Red Faction Guerilla

Skyrim

Darksiders

Metro 2077

Metro Exodus

Borderlands 1

Divinity Original Sin

Witcher 3 next gen update (not technically a remaster in name, but basically a remaster, more done to it than OG DS vs Remastered DS)

Please don't form opinions and spout them if you have little info on the subject you're trying to argue.

Cool, that is a list of what, 11 games, out of how many that come out? Hell, just how many get remasters or remakes. Thousands.

EDIT: It's not even tue, I certainly didn't get a free Skyrim enhanced edition or whatever even tho I had the original. So, drop the superior tone, thank you.

Imagine defending a company who sold you a broken product and is trying to sell you the fix as a whole separate full game purchase, I couldn't imagine ever corporate fanboying that hard dude. But yeah you have 100% achievements in DS and DSR so that explains a lot.
Excuse me? Where am I defending FS specifically when I say indie games should cost money and the remaster should have been (a lot) better?

Corporate greed, plain and simple. They don't even offer the discount for PTdE owners anymore, because they want to put DS:R on Steam Sales, but couldn't figure out how to make 2 discounts not stack additively (40% Steam Sale + 50% PtdE discount = 90% OFF, so a 50% sale would've made the game free and that's how i got my copy for just 4 bucks), even though i definitely saw games with loyalty discounts have sales stacking properly.

But honestly, if they've done a better job at remastering, i wouldn't be bothered by them charging original owners again. A good example are how Nightdive is remastering old classics. They don't just add modern features and prettier graphics, but actually fix stuff, fix dated controls or even add new things. Sometimes, remaking parts from the ground up when the source-code is lacking. As a sidenote, RIP to those guys now that Embracer Group is deflating...

Of course, it doesn't help, that the original PtdE on PC is such a horrible port. Could've at least made that wrong right, by giving DS:R for free for PtdE owners. What adds insult to injury, is that PtdE could've also easely be added to every DS:R owner's account for free for old mod and legacy support (DS:R has higher requirements and 60FPS is a hard-target because framerate is tied to gamepseed in that version) or simply for the curious as a courtesy.
But not doing that is standard practice and i don't know why game publishers seemly love to erase older versions. Our good example Nightdive does handle it like this as well, even though they claim to be all about game preservation.
demaster would be the first game I'd search "how to remove every trace of a game from my steam account".
Just imagining owning that disgusting ♥♥♥♥ already makes me puke.
Fing ♥♥♥♥ demaster that killed the most perfect game ever made.

BandaiCo wants all your money
no thanks, remaster looks ugly as sin....
I'm sick of remasters that just revamp the graphics in a usually less appealing way, and just ignore all the actual things that could have been fixed. There are so many small things that could have been fixed without changing any of the graphics or mechanics. I guess they don't really hire programmers for remasters, only a team of artists.
