Continuing on from the improvements we made in our last update, this latest batch of new content focuses on enhancing captain and fleet management by introducing a fleet overview UI, the ability to salvage ships, swap assigned captains between ships, and fire unassigned captains. Our ultimate goal here is to give you more freedom when customising and optimising your fleet, while allowing you to develop your favourite captains over the course of a campaign or free play mode session.


We have added a new Captains tab to the menus UI which provides a detailed overview of your fleet. From here you can check each captain’s:

• Currently assigned ship name
  
• Currently assigned ship class
  
• Current level and accumulated experience
  
• Proficiency bonuses (NOTE The % buffs reflect the captain’s unlocked specialisations in relation to their currently assigned ship)
  
• Specialisation tiers

You’ll also be able to perform the following actions:

Dismiss: Fire the captain if they are not currently assigned to a ship to free up an additional slot in the captains pool.

Quick select: Immediately jump to the location of the captain if they are assigned to a ship.

This view should give you a much better snapshot of your fleet, help you optimise the placement of your captains, and find specific ships that you may have misplaced on the map!


As many of you will know, your fleet cap is limited to the number of Captain’s Inns that you have built, with new Captain’s Inn spots being unlocked as you expand and conquer new islands from your rivals.

However many of you were frustrated by the fact that it wasn’t possible to manually destroy a lower tier ship (like a cog or ketch) to free up a spot for a bigger and better vessel (such as a frigate or brigantine). On top of this, captains were permanently assigned to potentially suboptimal ships until death e.g. A captain who specialises in piloting mid-high tier ships being permanently assigned to a lowly cog!

To combat this we have added a new ‘scuttle ship’ option to the radial menu which allows you to manually destroy a ship in your fleet returning the assigned captain back to your pool. You can then assign this captain to any new ship that you build.


We appreciate that some players will prefer more agile UI options so to pre-empt this we have added a new feature that allows for the swapping of two assigned captains between ships that are in close proximity.

To do this click the ‘Captain Transfer’ button next to the captain’s portrait in an individual ship’s UI, this will then display a circle around the selected vessel. While this proximity marker is active any friendly unit within this circle is considered in-range, and by right clicking on a target you can immediately swap assigned captains between the two vessels. This should allow for much greater fleet micromanagement on the fly.

Get ready to set sail once again – our second post-release update is live now!

Following on from the roadmap which we shared earlier this month today’s update focuses on improving the functionality of the captain’s inn, polishing the visuals of every captain’s portrait, adding more audio options, and addressing some of the balancing, QoL issues and bugs reported by the community.

Captain’s Inn Improvements

This new update will give you much more flexibility when choosing which captain is worthy of joining your fleet. When visiting the captain’s inn, you will now be able to re-roll the current offer of captains, with a 2-minute cooldown between each selection.

New Captain’s Portraits

To more closely match the painted art style that is used elsewhere in the game, we have reworked every captain’s portrait. Here’s a little sneak peek of the new painted versions that you can expect to see!

Ahoy there pirates!

It’s been just over 3 weeks since the release of Republic of Pirates and we’d like to start off by thanking you again for all your comments and for supporting us on this journey!

We have now reviewed our backlog and have created a priority list to address the most commonly reported pain points and feature requests, and so today we can reveal our short term roadmap to show you what we’ll be working on in the next few months.

Update 2 - Captain’s Inn improvements and additional QoL

Following on from the quality of life features added in update 1, the next update will mainly focus on improving the Captain’s Inn functionality, but will also introduce some additional visual polish and quality of life changes:

• Captain’s Inn Improvements: Captain re-rolls will be added to the Captain’s Inn. Additionally, in this update we will make adjustments to how captains are generated and replace the existing character portraits with new painted versions.
  
• Audio Options: Volume sliders for shanties and battle music have been added, as well as new audio alerts signalling when you’re under attack.
  
• Keybinding Options: Keybinding for mouse buttons and general QoL improvements.
  
• Borderless Window Lock Fix: Players can now move their mouse outside of the confines of the window when playing.

This update is planned to go live on 1st August.

Update 3 - New captain and fleet management system

For update 3, we will focus on introducing a host of new features for captain and fleet management:

• New captain and fleet management system: This new UI will show you which captains have already been assigned and their respective ships to allow for faster management on the fly.

On a final note, we have decided to leave our demo live and keep updating it for the foreseeable future so that new players can get a feel for the game before deciding whether or not to purchase.

Having spent the last 48 hours feverishly reading through all of your reviews, comments, and feedback, we have just launched a new update for both the main game and demo that addresses some of the most frequent pain points!


This was by far the most requested feature, so now you can create custom ship groups to aid you in your exploration of the archipelago and the defence of your islands!

• Press Ctrl + number (0 - 9) to create/recreate a ship group
  
• Hold shift as an alternative to mouse drag select to add/remove ships to the current group
  
• After a ship group has been created, press the group number (0 - 9) to select it
  
• Double press the group number (0 - 9) to quickly snap the camera to the centre of the group
  
• This change has required us to refactor the hotkeys previously assigned to the building menu quick access
  
• Instructions are on the input tab of the settings menu

PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately the grouping keys are not rebindable and this system is unavailable when using a controller.


To reduce the number of clicks and compliment the new ship grouping system we have introduced the ability to repair an entire group at the docks.

• There is now a button for group repair with a cumulative price in the multiselection window
  
• The group repair button only works if the player has the necessary materials to repair ALL ships in the group, the repair cooldown, and ALL the ships are close enough to a dock
  
• There is a tooltip that will indicate why it is not possible to repair the group

To improve the RTS elements further and make it easier to respond to threats, we have updated the multi-selection tool so that it has the following priorities:

• Multi-selection using mouse drag will prioritise ships even if a building is accidentally selected. This will be useful when trying to drag select groups near a friendly or enemy settlement/island
  
• Multi-selection using mouse drag will prioritise YOUR ships over enemy ships. Again quite useful during chaotic and large scale battles!

We received a lot of reports asking for more camera control options, so we have added the following sliders to the input tab of the settings menu:

• Camera rotation sensitivity when using a mouse is now adjustable
  
• Camera movement/acceleration sensitivity when using a keyboard is now adjustable

We noticed that a lot of players don’t like the fact that when they use the mouse wheel to zoom out they can accidentally end up in the tactical map.

• Zoom out to the tactical map via the mouse wheel is now disabled by default
  
• There is an option to toggle this functionality on and off in the settings menu
  
• Disabling this function will also disable the mouse wheel scroll from the tactical map back to the gameplay map

We have made it easier to find the different captain’s inn spots on specific islands.

• The spot is more obviously highlighted and a quest marker has been added that shows its location when trying to build a new captain’s inn.

Alongside these improvements we’re also made a few small changes to some of the early game quest descriptions to make them clearer!

Construct over 100 unique buildings across 7 categories to develop your settlements. Build residences to house your citizens and set up production chains to produce resources that fulfil their needs and wants. Strategically place depots to link production buildings and create an efficient flow of goods.

Upgrade your citizens to create a more diversified workforce and support increasingly complex industries. You’ll ultimately need to balance your global population with the local availability of specialised workers on every island you own to ensure steady growth across the burgeoning republic!


Visit the shipyard to construct 8 different ship classes, from the humble cog to the formidable man-of-war! Each ship has its own unique stats and can be constructed using a combination of producible materials and resources looted from destroyed enemy vessels. Assign individual captains and customise each ship’s cosmetics before ordering your new fleet to strike out and explore the archipelago.

Encounter and engage a variety of NPC ships with varying behaviours, from vulnerable merchant vessels to hostile neighbours. Gain experience through combat to level up your captains and unlock specialisations, or activate ship actions such as the scattershot and smoke bomb to give you the tactical edge in battle.


Expanding your settlements across different islands is the key to building a successful pirate utopia, as each island will have more buildable land, unique production conditions and access to essential, rare materials.

All islands will initially be under the control of rival factions, and you’ll need to defeat an island’s defences before it can be conquered. Be warned, however, as your expansionist actions will influence the attitudes of the other factions to your benefit and detriment. You’ll therefore need to navigate and actively manage complex diplomatic relationships in order to keep expanding!

We wanted to start off by saying a big thank you to everyone who played the demo this last week! Next Fest has just finished and Steam has told us that we managed to make it into the top 50 most played demos which we couldn’t have achieved without your support and enthusiasm, it really means a lot!

We’ve also been reading all of your feedback in the forums and have been adding your comments and suggestions to our backlog so that we continually improve the game after we launch tomorrow.

To show our appreciation we’ve decided to extend the availability of our demo until 3rd July 2024. We’ll also be rolling out a new demo update tomorrow morning that will contain a number of fixes chief amongst these being:

• More keybinding options including rotate building and space bar pause
  
• The game no longer gets stuck when the player presses the Esc button just after confirming the change settings in 'Autosave Interval'
  
• Autosave timer now works after selecting ‘YES’ on warning
  
• Save data no longer corrupts when saving on a full disk
  
• Middle mouse button can now be used to scroll back in from the tactical map
  
• Camera rotation sensitivity has been lowered when using the middle mouse button
  
• Zoom in and out controls are now smoother
  
• You can now interact with the notifications bar while viewing the tactical map
  
• You can now switch between the upgrade and downgrade tools simultaneously in the radial menu
  
• Improved performance and optimisation
  
• Various visual and UI fixes
  
• Various audio fixes
  
• Various localisation fixes
  
• Various achievements fixes
  
• Various controller and input fixes

Most importantly this new demo will also allow players to continue their saves if they choose to purchase the full game. It is important to note however that players who installed the demo BEFORE 11am CEST on 19th June 2024 will need to start a new save as the update will wipe existing saves (apologies for the inconvenience but this is the only way that we can get the demo saves to correctly carry through into the main game!)

Republic of Pirates will launch at 6pm CEST / 5pm BST / 9am PDT / 12 noon EDT and will be priced at $24.99 / €24.99 / £20.99. We’ll also be running a 10% launch discount until 3rd July 🙂
