But then I found a post on the Web that's literally from 16 years ago (September, 2008) with the answer. You have to push up on the left stick to make the platform go up. I'd completely forgotten that after all these years. So when it moved up that one time, I must have bumped the stick, and probably didn't even realize it. It is kind of weird, because I think you usually just use a panel and something happens, but not in this case.
