admittedly i do roll my eyes a little when i see another game try to capitalise on the popularity of vampire survivors but this is far enough removed and veers ever so slightly off the beaten path to differentiate itself from the dozens of other imitators. theres nothing wrong with making your inspirations known but so many of games that fall into this specific subgenre make no attempt at actually existing on their own merits. watching thousands of mobs die half a second after spawning and your xp meter fly through the roof doesnt hit the same when you can't help but feel like you've done this all before..

and that's kind of the inherent problem with these games. they are fun and interesting the first time you try but so often there is little more than any surface level depth that warrants playing them for long periods of time for reasons that aren't purely felt like obligations to get all the achievements. there are only so many permutations and variables you can add before each run feels formulaic.. where you naturally gravitate toward the same set of items and synergies every run because there's no reason not to. rogue: genesia is the first of these type of games where a 35 minute run didn't feel like a means to an end just to tick one more achievement off the list

the gameplay loop is actually fun, which sounds like a weird thing to highlight but it is fun for the right reasons. my enjoyment of this game sn't derived from hitting the dopamine crack pipe watching the meaningless numbers go up and the waves of enemies evaporate, but from the agency you are given as a player. there are 8 characters who all largely play very differently, a set of challenges from every world and difficulty modifiers within those challenges, diverging paths through the worlds and choices you have to make as you progress. this really doesn't feel as mindless as some of those other games and the deeper you explore you will find out very quickly if the build you've put together is going to go the full distance. when you play enough to get enough rerolls and item manipulation during runs it feels rewarding going out of your way to get the combo pieces you're looking for, and feels even better when those decisions materialise into a run where you feel overpowered and it feels earned

all my time played is on steam deck and it has handled really well. times where it has struggled with performance are times where i think most pcs would equally struggle, UI navigation is really jank on deck though. also have to knock off a point for having a character called rngesus past the year 2010. cant have em all i guess

significant amount of content worth your time for the asking price while still in early access. huge cosign

Best in the genre. Vampire Survivors walked so this game could run.

At least as good as vampire survivors. Cooler mechanics, but maybe a little less flavor. Good stuff though.
